LAFD: ‘Rotten Egg’ Odor Reported Across San Fernando Valley

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Authorities on Monday investigated widespread reports of a foul odor detected across the San Fernando Valley.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m., a “rotten egg-type” smell was reported “widely across (and possibly beyond) the north San Fernando Valley and Foothill communities of Los Angeles”, according to Brian Humphrey with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

No illnesses or any specific hazard has been associated with the odor, Humphrey told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO.

The sulfur-type odor — which Humphrey said “appears to be organic in nature” — had been reported as far west as Simi Valley and as far east as Cathedral City and Perris in Riverside County.

While officials worked to investigate the source of the smell, officials did acknowledge the smell could be affecting a wider swath of Southern California.

Stephen Harrison with the National Weather Service office in San Diego told KNX 1070′s Vytas Safronikas that whatever the source or sources of sulphuric odor, wind currents have been moving in an east to west direction from the Salton Sea into parts of the Greater Los Angeles area.

“It’s always possible to get some kind of odor coming from the Salton Sea up through the Coachella Valley through the Banning Pass and into the Inland Empire,” said Harrison.

Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Monica Carazzo said the odor is affecting schedules at some local schools, including Osceola Street Elementary.

“Some schools are implementing a rainy day schedule, meaning that once kids get their lunch, they go inside of the classroom, recesses are inside, that type of thing,” said Carazzo. “But that’s school by school.”

Residents do not need to call 911 to report the odor unless they are experiencing a medical emergency, Humphrey said

What I’ve noticed is that unlike the usual smoothness of the lines, the needle has been non-stop amplitude while it’s moving horizontally. Like a constant background noise, interrupted by a quake every now and then. I’ve only noticed this seismo sensitive like this, a few times only. Mostly it’s smooth horizontally.

That is interesting....Glamis is recording unrest as well.

No storms and should not be interference since multiple recorders and types are capturing it.

H2S is a common hazard on offshore oil rigs. You can smell it coming, and it smells like sulfur, or rotten eggs.

SoCal is still floating on a sea of oil. There is a permanent slick off the coast down there, attributable completely to the natural seepage of oil from cracks in the floor of the ocean down there. Coast Guard gets complaints about it all the time from people who don’t know that.

There was a case of a lake in Africa that killed two entire villages due to outgassing - first of methane, then H2S.

The methane killed many in their sleep - it’s odorless. The H2S made recovery teams it was the bodies rotting that caused the smell. The found out differently when some of them started passing out from being overcome by methane.

That's usually the sign of something on the move, be it magma or other liquid or maybe in this case, plate tectonics. I have to go find my link... :)

Is it harmonics?

If you click on the tab that says “start animation” the map will show each recorded quake that occurred in the order that they occurred over teh last 7 days.

Remember, they are only red for an hour (which in the animation is about 1 second) then they turn blue for the rest of that 24 period and then yellow for the rest of the week.

USGS reporting a 6.2 in the Southern Gulf of California.

An old song comes to mind that pretty well explains my thoughts on the subject. lol

That song is in my head now. thanks, lol
the jagged weirdness of the la earthcam was strange enough after a couple minutes, someone walked in, i could see their shoes. must have been a guy. guy looking feet, stood there and then left. the jagged-irregular 7 minutes of it resembled harmonic stuff. strange.
