NBC | 9-18-12 | Trailhkr1

Posted on 09/18/2012 6:58:56 AM PDT by trailhkr1

Revolution takes place in a post-apocalyptic future. Fifteen years earlier, an unknown phenomenon disabled all advanced technology on the planet, ranging from computers and electronics to car engines, jet engines, and batteries. People were forced to adapt to a world without technology, and due to the collapse of public order, many areas are ruled by warlords and militias. The series focuses on the Matheson family, who possess an item that is the key to not only finding out what happened fifteen years ago, but also a possible way to reverse its effects. However, they must elude various enemy groups who want to possess that power for themselves

Those folks sure do dress well to have been without power and most of life’s conveniences for 15 years.

ahahaha - assumptions are often far removed from facts on the ground.

Ummm- people managed to dress well, build well, live well -for tens of thousands of years before electricity, which has only been around for a blips-worth ot time.

Indeed, I, myself, grew up on a farm in a community that had no electricity until the early 1950's. WE had a good life - a largely independent life. Beautiful home and outbuildings built by my great grandfather in 1848.

Going back further, to 1620, one of my 8th great great grandfathers, Capt Myles Standish - whom most folks surmise only had a blunderbuss for a weapon - well, he DID have one, but he also had a mighty fine rifle - capable of carrying shot true up to 200 yards. And Standish was a marksman with it. His demonstrations of his marksmanship impressed the 'locals'.

John Alden, one of my 7th great great grandfathers, had a fine 50 cal. rifle that could carry at least 150 yds true. The rifle is in the museum - inspection shows the barrel could still withstand being shot today - altho' the stock may not hold.

I wouldn't assume that people without electricity after 15 years would be dirty ragamuffins, etc.

Here's an amusing piece Capt. Myles Standish.

Didn’t care for the show. Got wrapped up in LOST....tired of shows you have to watch for 5 years to find out a crappy “secret”. No thanks. My take is the necklace holds the information that PEOPLE destroyed the technology on purpose to “Save” the enviroment. The people were lied to about a coming global disaster and they destroyed the technology to save the Earth. Basicly Enviro-wackos did it! LOL

>>what’s with the brother being so weak he’s practically bedridden?

I forgot about that one. He lives in a 19th century world and every little exertion or breath of pollen incapacitates him to the point of death. But he’s healthy looking, buff, and with a nice head of shiny hair.

And the “door full o’locks”!!! Yeah. No one’s ever going to kick that door down to see what’s so important!

If I watch it again, it will only be to laugh at the stupidity of this show. Because you know its only going to get worse.

I, too, descend from the earliest colonists, and I still live in the old house my great-grandparents built more than a century ago. No electricity till the REA came in during WWII, and I grew up without AC. I can milk a cow, use an outhouse and make my own clothes.

That has nothing whatsoever to do with the silliness of that TV show.

It was pure Hollywood. We were asked to believe that designer duds looked as good as new after 15 years of wear in a primitive society.

The premise of the show was interesting, but the 15 year flash forward did not work. They needed to develop the storyline and characters.

I give it a month, tops.

I’ve had it with these open ended shows. I got hooked on The X-Files only to have it end with a whimper. I got hooked on Lost only to sit through a terrible final show. Not to mention all the other shows with open ended themes being cancelled before the truth was revealed. The ONLY television show that was done right was Firefly. They followed the cancellation with a movie, “Serenity,” that tied everything up in a nice, neat bow.

BTW...the “kung fu Rambo dude” who kicked ass on all those militia types sent to get him was none other than Billy Burke....

...who plays Bella’s dad, Charlie Swan, in the ‘Twilight’ films.

I’ll take a flying guess that the black woman worked with the guy that got killed towards the beginning, and they were working on some sort of power distribution system that didn’t require wires, but something went haywire and altered the very nature of artificially-generated energy.

Hey...it’s as good as anything else someone could come up with.

They need to bring back Jericho. I am not watching a post apocalyptic show that has no guns.

The big question I have is whether the power went off due to an EMP or something else. Obviously the results look like an EMP, but there is no indication that it was a weapon, so the door is open for something else.

I'd say EMP for "computers and electronics to car engines, jet engines" since all are reduced to computer control along with utility services in big cities but "batteries" are simple electrochemical devices and would not be subject to EMP if not in circuit. The big question for me is what happened to all the diesel engines? I've seen diesel power applied to Amish grain mills. Starters are compressed air powered so no electricity anywhere and no EMP failure mode. Everything from farm/construction equipment to highway haulers would be up and running unless the "BAD Ju-Ju" is something else.

Regards,
GtG

“the big question I have is whether the power went off due to an EMP or something else.”

Early in the episode one of the characters was talking to some children and he said that “physics just stopped working,” so that’ll excuse most logic and reason.

But I was happy to see that modern firearms still worked, as one of the militia men had a desert eagle. But apparently most of the good guns and bullets are not available to the masses.

“physics just stopped working,”

Yeah, this being Abrams, there will be some sort of either supernatural or alternative universe, or at least alternative physics kind of explanation. Logic and reason? There is usually a reasonably consistent internal logic to his story lines. That's enough for suspension of disbelief. That's what makes his stuff fun to watch. Should be a great ride.
