An Australian man has nabbed the world's attention after he captured what he calls a 'fire tornado' on video. According to Seven News in Australia, Chris Tangey of Alice Springs Film and Television was scouting locations near Curtin Springs in Australia when he saw the fiery phenomenon. A small fire was burning in nearby bushland, so Tangey decided to start filming, according to the report. But as he was filming, a small twister touched down on the fire, causing it to build into a spinning flame.

Looks like the combination of what is called a dust devil developed from the heat thermal of the fire on the ground. Unusual indeed but still very understandable.

No, I did not notice that it was spinning “backwards”. Actually, a dust devil is too small to be significantly influenced by Coriolis, it will respond to assymteries in the local heating. But I got your point.
