Fox is moving forward with a controversial new reality series where companies must decide whether to fire an employee.
The network is finalizing a deal for four episodes of Does Someone Have To Go? In each hour, a dysfunctional company will task employees with deciding whether to dismiss one of their own.
If this title sounds vaguely familiar, thats because news of an earlier version of this idea surfaced a few years ago. In 2009, Fox announced development on Someones Gotta Go, which planned to focus on economically challenged companies that needed to cut staff. An employee was to be fired in every episode. Though Fox billed the project as Survivor meets The Office, the idea received some criticism in the media, with one writer calling it another bold step toward live televised executions. Fox filmed a pilot, but the show never made it to air. Now, Fox confirms the project has been revived and is on the cusp of a series order, only with a tweaked title and less brutal format (the decision whether to fire the companys perceived weakest link is optional, and the businesses are merely dysfunctional rather than economically suffering). The concept polishing wont likely matter to some viewers who will still object to the idea of an entertainment program where regular people have to pack their desks and go.

Stay classy, Fox.
I’d like to see a reality show of government employees losing THEIR jobs.
It wouldn’t be a reality show. It would be a fiction.
‘Today we're at an office of the Department of Agriculture. Inside this office are 12 bunny inspectors, three mid-level managers, a branch manager, four secretaries, a janitor, an IT specialist and two press liaisons.
‘The latest budget has come in - and the money for this office has only gone up a couple percent - not enough to cover the increased costs from the automatic government promotions. To equalize the budget, up to three people in this office have got to go.
‘Each week, our ‘government inspector’ will have to decide if someone is going to be fired. He'll put them all through their paces. Will someone feel the target on their back and take vacation time that week for immunity? Or will they be the ones to ‘Pack The Box’?’
Besides, the cynic in me says why would I want to watch a show about job layoffs etc. when I can merely open my front door and see it live.
Who on earth thought that this was a good idea?!
This is like watching the killing process at a slaughterhouse- you might turn it on out of morbid curiosity and cringe your way through five minutes of it, then turn it off- never to return.
Not something that I’d watch for entertainment.
