Character actor Herbert Lom has passed away of natural causes at the age of 95.
The Czech born Lom fled to Britain to escape Nazi occupation. He soon started a film career and was generally cast as the villain. Lom appeared in films such as the original version of The Ladykillers, Spartacus and El Cid. In 1953, Lom also starred as the King of Siam in the London version of The King & I.
But Lom is best known for his portrayal of the beleaguered Inspector Dreyfus in half a dozen Pink Panther films over a period of thirty years. Most of these films were, of course, with his Ladykillers co-star Peter Sellers who shot to international stardom as Inspector Clouseau.

But I had no idea he was still alive...
95 is a heck of a run.
As a kid, I hated the Pink Panther movies (simply because I like the cartoons and wanted to see THAT). As an adult, though, I have a real appreciation for the absurd, slightly demented humor of them. Sellers was truly a gifted actor, and Lom was good in his part.
Is he the guy who shot the tip of his nose off in one of the Pink Panthers?
Yep. I think the set up was he got a pistol-shaped cigarette lighter mixed up with his actual sidearm or some such thing.
And shot poor assistant Francios in the arm too. Great stuff. RIP Herbert Lom.
That’s right. I haven’t seen those movies since I was little kid. I might have to see them again.
Blake Edwards at his best.
He played in numerous movies in the 1940's, usually in the role of a villain. He was also a player in many horror films.
He authored two historical novels.
He died in his sleep today at the age of 95.
I loved him in all those splendidly sinister roles he played.
Rest in peace, sir.
Wonderful actor, wonderful movies. I would wait every year for the new Pink Panther movie to come out. Then Peter Sellers died...
Herbert Lom is lots of fun in “The Ladykillers,” which also stars Peter Sellers.
According to various obits, he shed 40 letters to get his name down to Herbert Lom. He was also a wonderful comic actor.
Check out his performane in Night and the City, with Richard Widmark. They did a remake w/R.DeNiro,,but the original is better.
In the epic film ED CID, Lom (Bin Yusiff) never shows his face except in one scene in which he had a beard and heavy dark makeup.
He also was the Phantom in the 1962 version of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
RIP, Mr. Lom. Thank you for all the laughs.
Sad to hear of this.He was great in the PP movies.RIP sir.
My supervisor’s face twitches whenever I tell her something she doesn’t want to hear. I have to force myself to not smile each time it happens. RIP, Mr. Lom.
RIP Sir.
