Student lobbies for 'right to spike' hair

DELAND, Fla., - A Florida high school student is petitioning for the right to wear his hair in a 16-inch-tall spiked mohawk style banned by his principal.

Asher Stonesifer, a student at DeLand High School, said he is collecting signatures on a petition calling on signers to "fight for your right to spike" to convince principal Mitch Moyer to change his position on the issue, The Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal reported Friday.

Stonesifer, who said he has sported the style on and off since March 2011, said Moyer told him Monday he wouldn't be able to wear his mohawk in spikes at school anymore. He said he was sent home Tuesday after wearing his hair in spikes as a protest and has been wearing his hair down ever since.

Moyer said the Volusia student dress code makes the principal responsible "to see that the dress appearance of any student shall not be extreme, to the point of creating a disturbance or be hazardous to the student and/or others, or school property."

Stonesifer said he may take his case to the school board if Moyer doesn't change the policy.

The stupid brat can lobby all be wants. It is all but black letter law schools have broad discretion in establishing dress and appearance codes

...really?

I had to turn a shirt inside-out when I was in HS because it had the word “boob” on it. It “created a disturbance.” That was a shirt.

This kid had straight-up spikes jutting from his head. It’s beyond my comprehension how he can argue it’s not causing a disturbance or isn’t a threat to student wellbeing?

Moron!

I came from a single-parent home, and one thing we had to do was compromise on shoe choices. My brother always went for the super-expensive new Nikes/Air Jordans, and I always favored boots.

My junior year, I was pulled from class by the assistant principal and ordered to never wear my boots to school again. They accused me of “marking up the floors and walls” with my boots, an accusation that was unfounded. Since we couldn’t wear sandals nor go barefoot, I had no options for footwear.

I sent a one-page, well-articulated letter to the principal of the school and had a sit-down with her a few days later. I explained that I was from a single-parent household and my mother couldn’t afford new shoes. In the meantime, I’d been wearing some boat shoes that were a half-size too small and looked horrible with socks. She agreed to let me wear the boots again and told the AP to back off.

Sometimes the student(s) have a legitimate argument. This kid’s isn’t one of those times.

Some people crave attention so badly it is pathetic.

This kid is merely seeking attention in a stupid way.

He is probably non-athletic, a dork, bad grades, and no girlfriend.

I could be wrong but I wouldn’t bet on it.If he does have a girlfriend she is more than likely as pathetic as he is.

I had a somewhat similar experience my sophomore year in high school. I had a nice pair of running shoes that I used to wear for gym class. Problem was, the soles were black rubber, and the gym teacher (who was also the varsity basketball coach) didn’t want any of us marking up his gym floor/basketball court.

So, I ended up wearing a pair of beaten up old sneakers I usually saved for when I cut the grass or did some other job I didn’t want to subject my good shoes to. They didn’t support my foot half as well as my runners, but it got the coach to shut his pie hole, so I rolled with it.

If that doesn’t violate the dress code, nothing will

I was in HS in the 80’s . kids hair was much worse.
no one would even comment. this would be a non issue.

The kid who chased a teacher up the hallway stairs on his motor dirt-bike did cause a little disturbance though.

or be hazardous to the student and/or others

Sixteen in spikes can be hazardous and a disturbance to the student sitting in the desk behind him. But, hey, it's all about MEEEEEE!
