iphone 5 problems
An American in Turkiye

Posted on 09/30/2012 6:00:20 PM PDT by An American in Turkiye

Any fellow FReepers having difficulties with the new iphone 5, or specifically, the ios6? I love the phone but here's my nightmare:

Received phone last Wednesday. Activated it. Camera was inop, but everything else worked fine, including wifi access. Brought phone to Apple this Saturday, received a new replacement. Activated it at home. Everything works great EXCEPT I cannot connect to my wifi. Did an internet search and there are quite a few people with the same issue. Anyone else run into this?

Updated my iPad2 and have had no major issues. ESPN app sometimes closes right after opening.

My grandsons ipod touch was funky after the update. A reboot seems to have fixed the issues.

I got mine on launch day and had a brief issue with wi fi but it was on AAPL’s authentication server side and they fixed quickly. Zero issues other than that.

I have had no problems with Maps either... except for the humorous 3D renderings in some instances. Yelp has put some businesses where they don't belong, but that is Yelp's wiki database, not Apple. Maps is faster than Google Maps and just as, if not more, accurate.

A month ago, Google maps sent me and my girlfriend on a wild goose chase that put us on a dirt road that Google maps indicated was a paved road. A pothole I hit that I could not see because of the angle of the sun just at dusk on that road cost me over $500 in damage to my car and tires, not to mention recking havoc on my and my girlfriend's backs. On turning around we saw potholes we had luckily missed that my girlfriend says would have swallowed a Volkswagon! Testing Apple Maps on the same route search, the it found did not take us on that road, but found a SHORTER, safer route to our destination. . . on PAVED roads.

Now, it turns out that Motorola (owned by Google) has taken to publishing advertisements that use NON-EXISTENT addresses to show Apple Maps not finding them in Maps... while Google Maps finds the non-existent locations. Strange. However, it turns out that Apple Maps DOES find it... because what they showed, was that Apple found the RENAMED street and location! LOL!

In other instances, Google Maps showed illegal turns that if followed would get the driver a $250 ticket, while Apple Maps showed the correct LEGAL route... in downtown San Francisco... in Google's backyard. Google's Street View even shows two prominent No Right Turn signs at that intersection, yet their mapping says to turn right to get to the freeway there, instead of the correct route one block farther on.

I had the same issue. My iPod Touch connected fine to my wi-fi network (as it has been doing all year) but the iPhone5 would not connect.

I went to settings > general > reset

Then it took the password and all’s good. Hope the same thing works for you.

The cellular network vs WiFi issue does not appear to be limited to either Verizon, nor the iPhone 5.

My iPhone 4 with AT&T is showing nearly 3 GB of overage - which is the first time I’ve gone over in a year. Similar reports of 4s iPhones with AT&T as well.

Wonder if AT&T will do the right thing, like Verizon, and forgive this overage? I’d bet money that they won’t.

As a side note - I’ve also noticed that the tethering functionality is ‘flaky’. Works, but every day or two I need to re-boot my iPhone 4 to restore hotspot functionality. I could go without re-booting my iPhone 4 for extensive periods of time, without any similar hiccups.

Just waiting to start my new job and get the first paycheck, before I get my iPhone 5. Debating between 32 or 64 Gig. Making the hop to Verizon, because coverage with AT&T is horrible - and AT&T obviously has zero interest in addressing this issue.

I won’t beta-test for Apple. The update dot is now active on my settings icon, but I won’t upgrade for at least a couple months more.

Let someone else find all the bugs. I’ll install it after it shakes out a bit.

No more Apple products for me.

D@mn, you let that out before we could short the stock too. :)

Strange. My iPhone 4s with iOS 6 is not. I am waiting for my 16GB iPhone 5. I ordered mine the morning after the release. . . about six hours late. Should ship on the 6th of October. I ordered the 16G because I have the 64GB New iPad and use it for most things that need large data storage and use the cloud for most data storage. . . ergo, my phone doesn't need to have large capacity. I have my iPhone 4s already sold for $250. I just need to deliver it when the 5 comes in.
