Rush, Public Enemy among Rock Hall of Fame noms

By CHRIS TALBOTT, AP Music Writer – 6 minutes ago

Rush, Deep Purple, Public Enemy and N.W.A. are among the group of first-time nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They join returnees Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Kraftwerk among the 15 artists vying for entry.

Even in the iPod age, the list of nominees up for induction in 2013 is as eclectic as they come. Nominees differ wildly in sound, origin and influence, ranging from the enduring prog rock of Canadian trio Rush and Procul Harum to German proto-electronica act Kraftwerk, the disco of Chic and Summer to the New Orleans funk of The Meters and the blues of Albert King and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Motown also is represented by first-ballot entries The Mavelettes.

Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, acknowledged the extreme variety of this year's nominee class in a Thursday news release.

It’s actually called “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” and none of that is rock and roll any more than William Shatner’s records.

Rush fans always have the biggest outcry for HOF nomination for this band. The HOF bums are notorious for passing them over, too. They had better induct Rush on the first shot.

For my part, I think it’s a disgrace that Deep Purple only gets nominated after Jon Lord’s death. They were the riff factory for just about every metal riff you heard in the 80s.

OK, to each his own, but I never liked Rush. I don’t see what it is that Rush offers. I just don’t feel it. Funny, on cable music channels, Rush is both on the (Current) Rock channel & the Retro Rock channels. Maybe the Classic Rock too. One thing, though, that we probably can agree on: the debate tonight gave me a Rush!

I’d like to see Devo on that list. What’s Kraftwerk doing on there?

Kraftwerk were the Godfathers of Techno, and all other electronic music....I remember when I first heard “Autobahn” in 1974, totally blew me away, unlike anything I ever heard before.

There are two songs that stick out in my head from Kraftwerk, those being Ruckzuck (1970, used as the theme from “Newton’s Apple” on PBS, illegally too) and Das Model (sounds 80s but came out in 78).

Ruckzuck was from their “Krautrock” phase . . . they got some amazing sounds out of a Hammond organ and a flute.

While Geddy Lee’s singing voice is not everyone’s cup of tea, one has to respect the incredible musicianship of Geddy, Alex, and Neil (sp?).

N.W.A (abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes[1][2][3]) was an American hip hop group from Compton, California, widely considered one of the seminal acts of the gangsta rap sub-genre

I am familiar with their early stuff, I liked them more when they still used acoustic instruments like the flute.

Das Model is a great song. And “Trans Europe Express” was one of the most sampled songs by the early Hip Hop artists.

Can’t stand the pre-Permanent Waves albums because of Geddy’s wailing on the earlier albums...but by the 80s he toned it down considerably.
