Vanity: the Dept. of Labor and Bureau of Labor Statistics or: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

Posted on 10/06/2012 12:38:13 AM PDT by RC one

We at Free Republic have known for a long time that the Bureau of Labor staistics is notorious for using accounting gimmicks like the birth death adjustment to "massage" their economic statistics in a way that benefits President Obama and the Democratic party. Anyone who doesn't think this is the case should take a look at the July, 2012 Birth Death adjustment and compare that to the July 2011 Birth Death adjustment. In July, 2012, the BLS "estimated" that 52,000 jobs were created based on their "understanding" of where we were in the "business cycle". That's right, they just added 52,000 jobs to their statistical data based on nothing more than a guesstimation.

OK, so what about the July, 2011 Birth Death adjustment? They only added 5,000 jobs in July of 2011. So, based on their "best guess", they felt it was appropriate to increase that number by 1,000% a year later because the economy is obviously growing 1,000% faster this year I guess (that's sarcasm btw). The fact that we are only a few months away from the Presidential election is completely coincidental I'm sure.

It gets even better, they added some 377,000 "seasonal jobs" to the non-seasonal jobs numbers which were less than stellar. This was the largest July seasonal adjustment in BLS history.

What you should take way from this is that the BLS derives its data from highly subjective estimations and then uses its subjective analysis to portray a rosy economic picture for America, a picture that doesn't make sense to most Americans who live in the real world, not the world imagined by government statisticians.

There's another very important aspect of this to consider: the head of the Department of Labor, the Secretary of Labor, is a Presidential appointee and a life long Democrat. Her name is Hilda Solis and she was the US representative representing East LA, California for 8 years. She's a life long liberal California Democrat that answers directly to Barack Obama and she will lose her job if Mitt Romney beats Barack Obama. Obama has her on speed dial, I guarantee it.

Do you really think she's interested in painting an accurate economic picture here or is she probably more interested in making her boss, Barack Obama, look good so she can keep her awesome job and maybe even move up in the ranks during a second term? What happens to you when you make your boss look bad by the way?

The bottom line is this: the Department of Labor is a political organization, not an economic organization. If you think this political organization isn't working overtime to benefit Barack Obama and the Democratic party in any and every way possible, you probably believe that Barack Obama personally flew into Pakistan and rappelled out of a helicopter and then shot Osama bin Laden.

as Mark Twain once famously stated: there are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics. Think about it.

You’re absolutely right. It was also predictable this would happen, and why for months, I’ve been asking people to say that the main reason the unemployment rate had gone down was that the millions (now nine million, I think) of people who have given up looking for jobs while Obama has been president are no longer counted in the labor force, no longer counted as unemployed, even though they don’t have a job.

Uh, uh....no, but that piece of news was reported much later in the day:

Wow, that food stamp graph is a nearly perfect “logistic function” curve. One thing this indicates is that the economic environment changed abruptly, and has stayed changed. If we were in some sort of cycle, with a recovery, the curve would look like a “sine function” curve.

Statistics are like a bikini bathing suit: What they reveal are suggestive and what they conceal are vital.

You are right. It looks like what happened at the beginning of 2007 was really a tipping point - something the environmentalists are so fond of talking about - and the underlying state of the economy has not (yet?) reverted to its original state.

Too difficult to disect all the proabable and possible factors in a short post, but suffice to say that the Obama admnistration has not succeeded. (Though, he has certainly not been helped by the inept Eurozone bunglers.)

I don't think increases in annual food stamp usage are as easily massaged as other more complex economic data like inflation and unemployment. Measuring food stamp use is a simple matter of adding up a single string of publicly available numbers, numbers that aren't in any way open to subjective analysis. You would have to outright lie about the figures and they know better than to do that.

So, what the food stamp increase represents is further evidence that Barack Obama's Labor Department is, in fact, massaging unemployment (and inflation) data to create the illusion of an economic recovery which can then of course be attributed to his stewardship.

Again, do you really think that a Secretary who was personally appointed by Barack Obama is going to undermine his reelection? Should we believe that the Justice Department isn't just another political tool in Barack Obama's hands too? These people are his EMPLOYEES. They serve him, not us.

I'm not saying that things aren't better than they were in 2008, but things are still pretty bad when you shine a little light on the situation and they definitely aren't better than they were in 2001-2007, not for most of us anyways. Romney is absolutely right, the middle class has been buried by Barack Obama and while were on the subject of that, anybody that knows anything about socialism shouldn't be overly surprised by this.

Yep, and even behind the Labor Dept was Obama’s thoroughly politicized census bureau doing the raw data collection. It’s very easy to manipulate survey results by tweaking the population that you choose to call.
