The city's top cop visited the Queens home of a grieving mom a day after an NYPD detective killed her unarmed son. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly offered his condolences during the 15-minute meeting with Cecilia Reyes on Friday night.
It was nice of Commissioner Kelly to come and see the family and offer his condolences. It was a nice gesture, said Amanda Reyes, the 15-year-old sister of Noel Polanco, who was shot early Thursday morning.
The distraught mother would not come to the phone, but earlier Friday told the Daily News her 22-year-old son joined the Army National Guard six months ago in preparation for becoming a cop.
All he wanted to do was go to the military, continue his career in the military, and then continue his career as an officer, Cecilia Reyes said. That was his dream.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said his boss went to see Reyes on his own volition to offer his condolences. Browne would not provide details of the conversation.
Reyes is shopping for a lawyer and plans to meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton on Saturday.
The Queens district attorneys office has launched an investigation to determine whether Detective Hassan Hamdy, a 14-year veteran who fired the fatal shot, committed a crime.
The NYPDs Internal Affairs Bureau has questioned the eight Emergency Service Unit cops who were with Hamdy about 5:50 a.m. when he fired a single shot through the open window of the Honda Fit.
The bullet whizzed by front seat passenger Diane DeFerrari and hit Polanco, 22. Off-duty cop Vanessa Rodriguez, 29, was sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle. Shes on restricted duty after police say she stole a sweater from a Queens H&M store in June.
DeFerrari, 36, told the Daily News the gunfire appeared to be the result of road rage on the Grand Central Parkway near the 94th St. overpass in Queens. She also said Polancos hands never left the steering wheel. He posed no threat once police pulled him over for driving erratically after downing cognac at the Ice Lounge in Astoria, she said.
Noel didnt have a chance to put his hands up, said DeFerrari, a mother of three. They screamed, Put your hands up! and shot at the same time.
Sources said DeFerrari, a bartender at the lounge, was interviewed by investigators and stuck to her story.

Michael Palladino of the Detectives Endowment Association dismissed DeFerraris account as absurd.
No cop would shoot a person whose both hands are on the steering wheel, he said. Whos she kidding?
A benefit for Polanco is being planned for Sunday at the Ice Lounge, where he also worked. His National Guard unit up in Kingston is also planning a memorial for their company clown.
I love the guy. We all did, said Specialist Radoslaw Mosiej. He was more than a brother.
Police found no weapons in Polancos car, but they did find a 4-volt Ryobi power drill under the drivers seat. Sources gave conflicting accounts as to whether he was reaching for it. Police officials said the drill, which he used at a car dealership where he worked, may not be significant in the investigation.
I would guess that if you put a gun into the hand of ten people, cop or not, in the amped uproad rage state that NY’ers get into VERY easily, 8 of the ten would inadvertantly fire.
So then reaching down for a Ryobi drill would be a better reason to shoot him??? You got a problem.
Typical “cops are always right” JBT boot-licker attitude.
It never fails to amaze me that some so-called “conservatives” are really authoritarian statists and good little Germans at heart.
Has it ever occurred to you that this was just some ‘roided out “all citizens are really criminals” idiot donut-muncher who thought he was above the law like so many cops are today.
I wonder how many family dogs he shot before he decided to step up to citizens?
I can see getting a lawyer but, please, the Rev? Really? He's worse than an ambulance chaser.
Typical knee-jerk, “cops are always brazen killers” pantywaist tripe. All I did was ask questions, you scumbag. See, I need more info unlike you, who are ready, willing, and enthusiastically grabbing your ankles to believe whatever some Democrat newspaper tells you, as long as it implies all cops are murderous thugs.

So instead of watching the screaming cop with a gun at her window, she was watching the steering wheel in the opposite direction.
I wonder what the mugging victim did to cause the mugger to mug him.
I wonder what the child did to cause the pedophile to violate him.
I wonder what the wife did to cause the drunken husband to beat her.
I wonder what the murder victim did to cause the murderer to slay him.
The problem is within the heart and soul of the person who commits the crime, not the person who is the victim of a crime.
The puke shot him right in the face too ~ a head shot.
No, the Eagle Scout wasn't doing anything ~ just doing what the cops ordered.
What it gets down to is some cops are stupid. Now, do they put them in the federal witness protection program or something? Seems to me somebody is going to get the drop on one of them over something and the jury will let her walk so if they want the cops to survive they have to hide them out someplace.
The only reason she would do that is if what she witnessed was what DeFerrari witnessed and telling it would not be good for the police and whatever police career she is able to salvage.
Because most cops are thugs anymore. Read here about the dogs, residents at the wrong house, and old ladies in their own back yards cops kill here on FR,
Every day there is an incident like this.
I never ever give any governmental authority authority figure the benefit of the doubt. The fact that you do just proves you’re no conservative, but a statist at heart.
And calling me a “scumbag” reveals far more about your character - or lack thereof - than your pitiful attempt to impugn mine.
has already cost NYC over a half a million dollars
in two prior civil rights violations.
This, from the girl who called me a "bootlicker".
Beat it, you hypocritical scumbag.
You are. You always jump in these threads to defend the cops, no matter what the situation is.
You must be a cop yourself....which would explain your low IQ
