Man's dog was behind mysterious phone call

OREM, Utah, - A Utah man said he panicked when he received a call from his house while he was at work but he soon discovered his dog had placed the call.

Bruce Gardner of Orem said he had only been at work for about 10 minutes around 9 a.m. Wednesday when he received a call from his home phone, The (Salt Lake City) Deseret News reported Friday.

"I knew nobody was home, so I answered it," he said. "I said, 'Hello,' and all I could hear in the background was all this rustling noise. I wasn't quite sure what it was.

"My mind immediately went to, 'I'm being robbed,'" Gardner said.

However, Gardner and police arrived at the house to find there were no burglars.

Gardner said it wasn't until later in the evening when he thought to dial his home number from his cellphone while standing in his back yard.

"I called it, and I could hear the ring. I started going toward the sound and found it out here in the garden," he said.

Gardner said he determined his dog, Maya, had found the phone, which he apparently left outside, chewed it up and buried it in the garden.

"She must have hit redial, and what I could hear was her playing with this phone and chewing the phone up," he said.

Gardner said he explained the situation to police and apologized.

This happened to me recently, my son’s dog called me & on the answering machine it sounded like he was moaning in pain so I hurried to his house to check on him. Found the phone on the floor and his dog chewing on it. ha! He was not even at home.

That pup looks almost identical to the one we just got a couple weeks ago. I haven’t seen him on the phone yet though.

Years ago, when my third son was about 12, he kept trying to phone a friend whom he had just met recently. He would call, the phone would be picked up, but nobody answered back; all he could hear was a dog barking.

Turned out that the dog had taken to being annoyed by the ringing of the phone. This was before mobile phones, so the phone was on a table and picking up the receiver was how one answered. Doggie would jump up, knock the receiver off the cradle, and start barking.

LOL One of our dogs used to do that when she was a puppy. She would call a friend who finally came to us saying why am I getting phone calls from you and you don’t say anything. We discovered it was her when we caught her. I think she was fascinated and liked to hear a human voice.

That reminds of somehing that happened to a friend of mine.

She was on patrol in Milton when she got a call for 911 being dialed with no one talking. The address was a trailer in the bad part of town. The sort of neighborhood where a “Beware of Dog” sign may be up regardless of the presence of a dangerous dog.

She approached the trailer and noted the door was ajar. Looking in she noticed oxygen bottles and surmised that the call could have been a medical emergency, justifying her entry. She announced and started to enter just as two enormous pit bulls ran out of the bedroom. She closed the rickety door which shuddered under attacks from the dogs.

After a couple of minutes the property owners son asked what was going on. The owner was in the hospital. The dogs has knocked the phone off the hook and dialed 911. Calling in food apparently.
