"The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.' "

Hi All.

A great lineup tonight...with a sweet 10 o'clock hour...

Will need to have the O’s game on with the sound down though. We can take the Yankees.

Hello, FRiends!

We have Mysterious Traveler and The Whistler! :-)

Thanks to J. David Goldin's RadioGOLDINdex for these synopses, although we are missing a few tonight.

7 PM EST Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. November 24, 1955. Part 4. CBS net. "The Amy Bradshaw Matter." Sustaining. Johnny finds that he has even more of a reason to keep Amy than he'd realized! The system cue and public service announcements have been deleted. Amerigo Moreno (music supervisor), Bob Bailey, Carleton Young, Don Diamond (producer, host), Florence Wolcott, Jack Johnstone (director), Larry Thor, Robert Ryf (writer), Roy Rowan (announcer), Vic Perrin, Virginia Gregg. 11:06.

7:15 PM Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. November 25, 1955. Part 5. CBS net. "The Amy Bradshaw Matter." Sustaining. The conclusion of the story. A pretty rough wind-up. The system cue and public service announcements have been deleted. Amerigo Moreno (music supervisor), Bob Bailey, Carleton Young, Don Diamond (producer, host), Florence Wolcott, Jack Johnstone (director), Larry Thor, Robert Ryf (writer), Roy Rowan (announcer), Vic Perrin, Virginia Gregg. 11:01.

7:30 PM Dragnet 10/05/50 #069 Big .38 (NBC) (25:54). Amazingly, this synopsis is missing from the RadioGOLDINdex. It has programs 68 and 70, but not 69.

8 PM Gunsmoke. January 9, 1954. CBS net. "Joke's On Us." Sponsored by: Sustaining, Sanka. Three men lynch a rancher for stealing horses. Two of the men are shot, and the third one is threatened. The program is followed by "Sanka Salutes," sponsored by Sanka. The same script was used on the program of February 9, 1958 (see cat. #52120). The script was used on the Gunsmoke television series on March 15, 1958. William Conrad, Parley Baer, Georgia Ellis, Howard McNear, John Dehner, Helen Kleeb, Sam Edwards, Ted Bliss, Herb Ellis, John Meston (writer). 1/2 hour.

8:30 PM Philco Radio Time 01/29/44 w/Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour (Philco) (ABC) (29:38). Synopsis is missing. RadioGOLDINdex Philco Radio Time shows don't start until 1946 shows.

9 PM Gangbusters. November 1, 1940. Program #210. Blue Network. "The Ape Bandit"/"The Case Of Dwight Beard." Sponsored by: Sloan's Liniment. An athletic collegiate turns to robbery and murder for a career. "Gangbusters Nationwide Clues." Charles Duffield (escaped convict): tattoo of the the word "Chief" on left arm, tattoo of heart-dagger-bird-ribbon on right arm. Attention Western states: a man with dark bushy hair (wanted for robbery, beating of woman). Attention Pacific coast: Bank robber wanted. The spelling of the program name is open to debate. Original literature in the 1930's spells the program name as two words. By at least 1953, the program was spelled as one word. When the changeover occurred is uncertain. Next week's program is announced as number #213. Charles Stark (commercial spokesman). 30:31.

9:30 PM Michael Shayne 1948 #05 The Hare That Killed (Synd) (26:44). Another missing synopsis.

10 PM The Mysterious Traveler. October 11, 1949. Mutual-Don Lee net. "The Last Survivor." Sustaining. The spacemen in the first ship returning from Mars witness the destruction of the entire Earth. Maurice Tarplin (as "The Traveler"), Ralph Bell, Robert Dryden, Robert A. Arthur (writer, producer, director), David Kogan (writer, producer, director). 29:35.

10:30 PM Whistler 04/04/46 Panic (Signal Oil) (CBS) (29:36). Sorry! This one's missing, too.

Nice!

Why the paperwhite? Without ads? You dove in on the new model. I can't figure out if I'd rather have that or the touch.

Still really loving mine.

Oh, I forgot to check out that station! Making a note now... We’ve been listening to a station out of Cincinnati that plays the old classic music from the 30s, 40s and 50s, plus some OT radio shows as well: http://www.wmkvfm.org/

It sounds like you had a good time with your family. When grilling is involved, that’s even better!

That debate was amazing! I also can’t wait for Ryan!

I just pulled up your station and it sounds like oldies from the 50s and 60s. Great stuff, is that the stations genre?

The Paperwhite had good reviews so I decided to get it. (without ads)
Do you recommend Amazon Prime?

If you order enough from Amazon it's definitely worth it.

Vision, their programming is fairly varied. I’ve heard the “nostalgia” tunes, big band, etc. And, they apparently run Suspense or the Whistler (can’t remember what Keith said) for an hour around 5 PM, plus other stuff. Some of their jocks seem fairly knowledgeable.

The station is a nice alternative to our local “greatest hits of all time” station which mixes Frank with 90s pop. :-/

Doc, Keith and I are worn out from working hard all week, even today.

The cool weather hit us, and it's wonderful. We also have our annual Cruisin' the Coast week starting today. It's the best week of the year, with classic cars descending on our Coast. So many beauties cruisin! It gets bigger every year. People come from all over the country.

I hope you're both doing well, Doc!
