Came across this at the range today. Seems like a great project. How wonderful to teach young people about the real America while encouraging firearms training!

Telling HistoryProject Appleseed is an activity of The Revolutionary War Veterans Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to teaching every American our shared heritage and history as well as traditional rifle marksmanship skills. Our volunteer instructors travel across the country teaching those who attend about the difficult choices, the heroic actions, and the sacrifices that the Founders made on behalf of modern Americans, all of whom are their “progeny.”
Our heritage program vividly portrays the Battles of Lexington and Concord with the kind of care and immediacy that is absent from most formal schooling. Modern listeners are confronted with the danger, the fear, and the heartbreaking separations that arose out of the choices made on April 19th, 1775. They are also reminded of the marksmanship skills and masterful organization that ultimately helped set the colonists on the path to success. Those who attend gain a better understanding of the fundamental choices faced by our ancestors as they began to set the stage for the nation we now enjoy.

More historyOur rifle marksmanship program complements our history and heritage. We teach the traditional American marksmanship skills. There are, however, several aspects of our marksmanship program that deserve special mention. We are particularly proud of our younger attendees. In accordance with applicable local laws, young people with sufficient maturity are welcome to the Appleseed line and can, with parental permission, join the cadre. The RWVA recognizes the importance of introducing a wide cross section of Americans to their marksmanship heritage. To encourage participation, we offer our program of instruction at a greatly reduced price to both women, and responsible persons under 21; Finally, an important aspect of our marksmanship program is called “Adaptive Appleseed.” Project Appleseed is serious about bringing our heritage and marksmanship instruction to everyone so we’ve committed ourselves to adapting Appleseed to the special needs of those who have certain physical challenges.
Why teach marksmanship? Because good shooting requires learning positive traits such as patience, determination, focus, attention to detail, and persistence. Since these skills are likewise key elements of mature participation in civic activities, we urge our students to take what they have learned about themselves as marksmen and apply it to their participation in their communities and in the wider American society in accordance with their own choices about how Americans should govern themselves.

The Appleseed Project is an excellent program run by Patriots.
They sent a rep to speak at one of our tea party meetings last year.
They teach kids to shoot proficiently with iron sites and give them a lesson in American History.
Owning a piano doesn’t make you a concert pianist. The same can be said for owning a rifle. Go to an appleseed and learn how to REALLY shoot. Maybe I’ll see you there. I’m an instructor.
Appleseed is an incredible program. The founder, “Fred”, deserves a profound thanks from every patriot. This is a man who saw a problem, put his own personal funds to back a program, and built a cadre of dedicated State Coordinators, Instructors, Riflemen, and followers who are taking the message of liberty and marksmanship to every corner of the country.
The ‘dangerous old men’ strike still makes my heart beat faster with pride in our forefathers who built this country.

I am really interested in learning about this. I have never fired a gun. I was looking through the information on the website. I don’t have all that equipment either, and have very little money left to buy stuff.
Is this course suitable for newbies? Do they have guns and safety gear available to rent? So you have any advice on the best way to get started on learning?
I live in Missouri, I am not sure, but I think I could borrow a gun from a friend, but then I am not sure that it is legal to transport it.
I am pretty sure it does not have to have a permit. He got it before registration was required, so I don’t suppose I would need a registration either.
Sorry to be so unimformed, but appreciate any advice you might have. Thanks.
Find an event close to you and on the event info page, you’ll find contact info. They should be able to arrange a loaner rifle for you.

I attended an ‘Appleseed’ a couple of years ago and it was a very worthwhile day. A newbie to shooting should almost be required to attend one.
I had a Browning Lever .22 with me but it was totally not the gun of choice. They rounded up a Ruger 10/22 for me at no cost.
The gun you use can be any caliber within reason (I think a .50 caliber would be a bit of an over kill.) but it needs to be one that you can change clip/magazines in relatively fast. A lot of shooting goes on in a day and thus the cost of ammunition is a factor.
After the event I purchased my own 10/22 with the intent to attend another event. The old body has difficulty assuming some of the positions in a rapid manner and would not be able to qualify for the ‘Rifleman’ award so the incentive was lessened.(I have my own shooting range in the back pasture so I can get practice anytime I want.)
They had three sessions on the beginning of the American Revolution that were very worth while review of our heritage. I came home and Amazon’d up on several books on the war. The one complaint I might have is that they do not cover the other parts of the war, especially Cowpens and King’s Mountain where the ‘Over the mountain’ boys and the militia played a very big role in winning the war.
The instructors and helpers were absolutely superb. Safety was if anything over emphasized but I would not change this.
