Authorities say a Lamborghini hit speeds topping 100 miles an hour before it smashed into the median and exploded in flames on Interstate 15 in northern San Diego County.

A California Highway Patrol official says the driver, a 35-year-old San Marcos man, may have been drinking alcohol before the crash late Saturday near Fallbrook.

City News Service reports the driver was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he was treated for burns to his face and other serious injuries.

The CHP says the 2008 Lamborghini was headed north on Interstate when the car drifted from the right lane into the center median.

The crash cut the car in half and it caught fire.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for about 20 minutes following the crash.

I was going to say ‘100mph is nothing in a Lamborghini;’ then I saw that alcohol was involved.

I was going to say ‘100mph is nothing in a Lamborghini....

I'm with ya. What a waste of a great car on an unskilled driver.

He could have used an Accord or something and saved a couple hundred thou.

It is a particularly miserable afterlife for guys who die speeding... In third gear.

At least that's what the Limbo-genie tells me.

“...how do you crash a Lamborghini at 100 miles an hour?”

Miss the shift into 3rd gear, while pouring a scotch?

Will his insurance company pick up the tab if he is found guilty of DUI?

That could be one of the most expensive drinks ever!

Did some work for a client with several Lambs in his car collection. His mechanic called them death traps.

I’ll bite. Why?

Briefly,1) because 20 years working in a big city ER has taught me what despicable selfishness like that can do to people...*innocent* people. 2) Because my 18 year old niece was killed by a repeat offender drunk driver 3 days before Christmas.

Ask me to give details on point #1 and I'll tell you true stories that will make your blood boil.

Very sorry for your loss. Sounds like an especially difficult wound to heal, especially given your occupation. Just said a prayer that eventually healing does come to you and your family though.

I thank you very much for your kindness. My niece died 25 years ago but it's still devastating to my sister. For years and years she visited the grave every single day.It was heartbreaking.

My point in all this is the damage that's done by..."individuals"...like this.Apart from my niece I saw it over, and over, and over again at work.If you ask an ER physician, nurse or other ER staff member which part of their work they like least they'll tell you that,as bad as seeing the suffering of the patients is,watching the grief of the families is even worse.

It's commendable that 25 years later you still have a constructive fire simmering in your belly that, through your words, may have saved a life or two along the way.
