Alex Karras was recently released from a California hospital after having kidney failure so he could spend his final days with family. ''He may be dying of kidney failure because now his body is catching up to the deterioration of his mind,'' Craig Mitnick, Karras' attorney in a lawsuit against the NFL, told The Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon. The 77-year-old former defensive tackle and actor, who was born and raised in Gary, Ind., has been surrounded by his wife and kids at his home in Los Angeles.

Remember the posters on FR who simply want more and more violence, harder hits, more potential concussions?

Mr. Karras opposes you AND the NFL.

I am sorry the man has kidney failure , but I don’t see his beef with the NFL.
He chose his profession and it was good to him.
Many men die from damage done to them by their chosen profession. Coal Miners and black lung lumbermen and accident inthe woods, Firefighters, and Police. there are many hazardous occupations that don’t pay near as well as Football.Boxers take head hits all the time, Cassius Clay is a good example, but he like Karras chose his profession.
When you are 70 as I am 77 doesn’t seem so old, but many people don’t make it that long.

I have friends who have their knees replaced and rotator cuffs replaced replaced who were jocks in High school, should they be suing the High School?

I have sympathy for Mr Karras in that he is dying, but the responsibility for his football career is his alone,Not the NFL’s.

Just saw him in a “MASH” rerun. Didn’t realize he was that old. Godspeed, old warrior.

Yeah, you never hear of 77 year-old men who have never played football developing dementia and dying of kidney failure...

My hubby had rotator cuff repair last week on one shoulder. The other one will be done when this one heals.

Both knees are bad and need replaced by the Doc’s say he’s too young (54).

He was on the football team in high school.

No one fast fowards 40 years when they are the popular high school jock with cheerleaders on their arms.

Of course, he did end up with the class nerd, not the cheerleader, for a wife. Small consolation for all the aches and pains I guess LOL.

Venturer, your point that people in many professions die as a result of the ‘risks inherent’ is, in my opinion, off the mark.

Yes, some professions are more dangerous than others (I think we can leave police and firemen out of the discussion), but (like the NFL) when business owners ignore known risks and do little to mitigate them, then (unlike you, apparently) I do see Mr. Karras’ ‘beef with the NFL’.

And I think your attempt to likening brain damage to worn-out knees and shoulders is a poor one. I guess we should ban all physical activity - ‘for the children’.

And for the record, you don't sound particularly sorry for Karras.

As a kid, I lived about a mile from his home in Bloomfield Hills. We used to ride our bikes up to Cranbrook and watch the players at summer camp.

I normally don't watch Blazing Saddles unless it's the uncut version, but I will watch his two best scenes, punching out the horse, and “Mongo only pawn in game of life”.

Professinal football players have shorter lifespans than average. He made it to 77 and that is fairly old for a former NFl player.

He was a very talented man. Prayers for him and his family.

I would agree provided the NFL didn't withhold information about head injury risk from the players. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the basis of the lawsuit? If that allegation is proven, then I'm a lot more sympathetic to the plaintiff's claims.

Well you are right, I guess.

My sympathy for Karras is no more or less than for anyone who I don’t know that dies. I have sympathy for all who suffer, but of course more for people that I know.

I believe that is the fact with most people.

Celebrities are just people, mostly people I do not know.

Karras was from Gary IN?

Born about 1940, Gary was still mostly Italian, Greek and Polish. It did quite well as a company town for US Steel.

My father lived there for a while after WW II and liked it better than Chicago.

It is not the same city any more that Karras knew as a young man.
