One practical note on alternative transportation... Practice.

I recently purchased a rather robust bicycle with folding baskets, etc. because I generally make short trips.

I used to race bikes when I was a teen, spent my military years running and doing PT, and I still walk 1 to 3 miles a day.

That freaking mechanical torture device kicked my butt on a longish trip today. It has been over 35 years since I've been on a bike, and my thighs, glutes, and calves are still burning from today's ride.

I know it will get better with time, but it's good to use stuff BEFORE you need it, just so you know.
