Washington Nationals fall one strike short against St. Louis Cardinals in NLDS Game 5
The Washington Post ^ | Saturday, October 13. 2012 | Adam Kilgore

The question of how baseball could be so cruel to this city may be answered some day. It existed in horrible form in the nation’s capital for decades, and then it vanished for 33 years. It came back gnarled and wretched for seven more seasons, only to yield to this blissful summer, to the moment Friday past midnight when Drew Storen stood on the mound at chilled Nationals Park and, with two outs in the ninth inning, threw 13 pitches that could have moved the Washington Nationals four wins from the World Series.

The St. Louis Cardinals would not allow it. Baseball, this town’s cold mistress, the sport that dares you to love it, would not let it happen. The Nationals led the Cardinals by six runs after three innings. They led by two runs after eight innings. Washington’s miserable relationship with baseball had been exorcised, until it materialized in a more wrenching, twisted fashion than ever seen before.

That was crazy. Last year and now this year, the Cardinals just refuse to die.

The St. Louis Cardinals will probably meet the New York Yankees in the World Series, both teams having combined for 37 World Series championships. Excuse me for not watching, it’s football season now!

Yo Nationals, how’s about not sidelining your best pitcher?

If you knew you were going to limit him to 160-180, why not ease him into the season in May-June, space out the starts, then you still got him for the playoffs ...

Nobody thought that the Washington Nationals were going to contend this year. 2013 was supposed to be the year all the pieces are falling into place.

For all his skill and success as a manager, Davey Johnson has some obvious shortcomings, one of which lead directly to the National’s loss last night. He leaves pitchers and position players in too long when they are not performing. Gonzalez, Espinosa, and Storen are last night's examples, but he lost six or eight games over the season leaving Henry Rodreguez and Clippard in when they were obviously in over their head. Compare Davey Johnson to Joe Girardi who sat A Rod for Ibanez and finds himself in the league playoff.

Yep, it’s no big deal that the Yankees have some aging players on the team, they will go out and buy some new players in the off-season.

You never know. Did Oakland think they would go so far? You gotta be prepared!!

So if they knew Strassberg would only go a limited amount, what difference would it make to have him at the end of the season? Just when you NEED an ace to do his stuff - look at Detroit in Game 5.

The Washington Senators won the 1924 World Series. That is much more recent than the Cubs.

You got that right about Oakland. Their Moneyball GM is definitely all that.

2003 Chicago Cubs had a dominant rotation with Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano. They seemed to be set for another decade since all of their aces were in their 20s. Then before you know it, Prior and Wood struggled with their arm injuries and Zambrano couldn't carry the team on his back by himself.

The point is, as you said, the window of opportunity is very small. When it opens, you gotta do everything possible to take advantage of it because you don't know when's the next time it'll open up again.

Their Moneyball GM is definitely all that

Base-tard wouldn't even take the tarps off the upper deck, because it might look like the team is popular - and he's trying to move it to San Jose
