Slow We Get! But Why Is Endeavour 10 Hours Behind Schedule?!

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — When it flew around up in space, Endeavour could go 17,500 mph.

On the ground in Los Angeles Saturday … we got that the shuttle had to move slowly. Two mph … tops, said officials.

...

After saying Endeavour was running about 4-6 hours late most of Saturday evening, officials said the shuttle was actually 10 hours behind and would likely not make arrival to the California Science Center before 6 a.m. Sunday. Endeavour was originally set to make it to its final destination 8:30 p.m. Saturday.)

What gives? Why so slow? Why was the shuttle moving at far less than the speed of light. Some snails could have beaten Endeavour to the CSC.

CBS2 and KCAL9 Bobby Kaple went in search of answers.

He reported that “the shuttle started out 30 minutes behind schedule.”

Then there were several maintenance issues on the road, he said.

After the maintenance issues, some trees got in the way and had to be trimmed of cut down.

Turning onto Martin Luther King Boulevard provided some old trees and new challenges as well. After officials decided to keep some of the older palm trees, it required the shuttle to make more of a zig-zag pattern, said Kaple. That will also add time to the journey.

Crowds of people lined up, some for hours, didn’t seem to mind the long, arduous wait.

The California denizens along the way just could not figure out what the hell to loot off the treasure. No damn widescreens on it, no beer, no lotto, Newports - no nuttin!

Just a bunch of damn crumbly tiles and some tire rubber that don’t fit my 22s!

Took the kiddies by at 11pm after the Laker game. Helluva a crowd out. They were lined up all along MLK from Vermont to Crenshaw. We took back streets till we got to Stocker and then parked in the Santa Barbara Shopping Center. Got within about 40 feet of it. Pretty amazing.

If they would have placed it at NASA-Houston, they would not have had that problem, but then they could not have denied Texas a retired orbiter.

They spend all this money to move the stupid thing like this?

Do we have money to waste?

Why not put it someplace easier to get to?

I dont know about its weight but couldn’t some big helicopters pick it up and transport it in an hour?

LA trees hold up shuttle journey

The final journey of the retired US space shuttle Endeavour through Los Angeles is delayed when the giant spaceship encounters trees along the route.
