Albuquerque gun business holding coyote contest

This is my Bushmaster XM-15...

An Albuquerque gun business is having a contest to see which two men can kill the most coyotes. The grand prize for winning the contest is a pair of AR-15 rifles. The contest has people sounding off about the upcoming contest.

The people who live around the Village of Corrales may have never met Susan Weiss, but they've seen her.

"The coyote lady. That's what i'm referred to as, the coyote lady," Weiss said. She likes the title. She has been an advocate for the "Coexist with Coyotes" group for more than a decade and thinks the coyotes get a bad rap. When she heard about the "Coyote Calling" contest by Caliber's to see who could kill the most coyotes, she was disgusted.

"Hunting to eat is one matter. But just hunting for a contest I think is really immoral and disgusting," Weiss said. "Most of the people that I talk to really enjoy seeing them and don't want to bother them and do understand that they have to keep their animal- their own animals safe."

Caliber's owner, Ryan Burt, said he was approached by several ranchers from around the state who have been dealing with the coyote problems. He thinks it's a win-win situation for Caliber's sportsmen who get to hunt, and for ranchers who have coyote issues.

"There's a balance. right now the balance according to our ranching and farming community is that it's kind of shifted to the coyotes favor," Burt said.

Burt and Weiss are both in agreement that whether you like it or not, no one is breaking any laws. Coyotes have absolutely no protection by any law in NM.

Well - I lived in NM for most of my youth. We were inundated with coyotes - primarily because we were inundated with jack-rabbits.

Now if you're a farmer, you really like coyotes, because they keep the rabbit population down a bit, making it more likely your crops won't be damaged as much.

If you're a rancher, you don't like coyotes because they gang up and go after your calves.

So it's sort of all-out war against both of these critters there. Yet, there still exists a huge number of both.

Lady you’re welcome to your opinion. You are now dismissed.

We have many coyote contests here and usually the entry fees go toward the prize money that sometimes be several thousand dollars. I have entered a couple times with a buddy. We placed 3rd one time with 6 coyotes, but it was a small contest with only about 20 teams.

It is not unusual to take 20 or more coyotes to win one of the larger contests.

You wrote: “Coyotes are vile, vicious creatures.”
One day we watched five coyotes kill and eat a deer about two hundred yards from our house. The ‘yotes were blood red from nose to behind their ears. They clean up the after birth following calving and are not too proud to eat a calf if they can manage it. We have been known to shoot them but being the successful critters that they are, we have no shortage around here (se Arizona).

No they aren't...they are part of the balance of Nature and my guns and I help keep things even out there.
Coyotes are good targets and there is no end of them.

Yes Ron there are still a large number of coyotes.

I don’t know how I feel about a coyote hunt and have been on the fence since I first heard this on the radio several days ago.

But I do think Albuquerque may have quite a lot. We see them run in the arroyo behind our home almost daily (we live on the NW side of Albuquerque and are in no way rural).

A relative that lived there in Alb told me about several of his neighbors losing pets to coyotes (cats and small dogs.)

When that begins it's time to drive these predators out, or severely reduce the number of coyotes in some fashion.

We had a bounty on them back in the early 60's - it worked well - making them far less numerous rather quickly.

They’re not afraid of humans anymore. That’s one of the biggest problems, IMHO!

And, like mice & rats...you can kill ‘em all you want but they’ll never go away.
