Posted on 10/20/2012 10:01:38 AM PDT by Vince Ferrer
This is a positive thread about the top things a Romney administration could do to get the economy moving again, without the government paying a lot of money.
Reverse all drilling bans imposed by Obama.
This can be done the first day. Do not listen to anyone who brings out the tired "it will take ten years to get any oil" argument. First, it will not take ten years, it will be more like three. But most importantly, the jobs start immediately after the permit is issued. It takes work to get the oil out of the ground, and we want that to be happening as much as we want the oil. This also includes the Keystone pipeline.
Dump it. Preferrebly, dump the whole idea that employers should provide health insurance at all. Employers can give their employees money, and emoployees can buy their own insurance. This will lower the cost of hiring workers, and by having individuals in charge of their own health care, will encourage shopping based upon price.
Tort reform / Loser pays reform
By lowering damages for frivilous lawsuits, prices for all goods and services can come down.
Allow ethanol fuel for vehicles to be made from any source of ethanol, not just corn.
Ethanol can be made more cheaply from other sources, so it would lower the cost of fuel at the pump if ethanol was made from cheaper sources than corn. Coal and natural gas can be used to produce ethanol. We already have E85 vehicles, and so 85% of the fuel for those can come from coal and natural gas, which is easier than converting our fueling infrastructure to support more natural gas vehicles.
With a small amount of funding/tax encouragement, we can develop standard designs for Thorium nuclear reactors, which are cheaper than nuclear, and we have plentiful supplies of thorium.
Self driving cars
Private business are investing heavily in this area, and it would be a great increase in productivity for the economy to have self driving cars. There will also be a jobs boom inplementing the hardware and software infrastructure for this. There isn't a lot of funding necessary from the government, but federal and states could take the lead in encouraging the development, implementation and standards for communication between cars, and cars and infrastructure.
Self sailing ships
The same idea as self driving cars, but with our network of river and intercoastal waterway commercial craft of barges and ships. Barges and ships can be pilotless and communicating with each other to bring down shipping costs, relieving traffic on roads and rail, and bring down export costs, such as for exporting grain. This would only require government money for a communications infrastructure, such as the current FAA and air traffic control. The technology is available for self driving cars, but is currently too expensive for consumer cars. However, for shipping it is not too expensive, as the technology is a small part of a multimillion dollar ship. It could be implemented on ships faster.
Disband TSA and replace it with a down-sized privitized force.
Disband TSA and replace it with a down-sized privitized force.
Stop deficit spending?
shut down the Federal Reserve
That’s the goal...what are the steps to get there?
Immediately cancel every Executive Order of the Obama administration and place a moratorium on the enforcement (pending review of each and every one by the appropriate Congressional committee) of all EPA and other regulations, not authorized and funded by specific Congressional action, issued since 2008. Any personnel in the respective agencies who publicly object or are found to be acting in any way to obstruct this would be subject to immediate dismissal.
Announce that he will reverse all of the lame duck EPA rules that Obama will surely enact before Romney is inaugurated.
Defund the TSA, EPA, and Department of Ejumucashun.
Stop shoveling money to ineffective schools and start promoting online education for all grade levels. Promote real educational choice for parents as well, and legitimize homschooling. Out of work parents can be a great benefit to society even when they are unemployed, by homeschooling their children.
1. Limit the monopoly of unions.
Any union must be local only. Do not allow regional, state or national representation.
2.Limit the ‘bundling’ of major television networks. Television networks cannot own their own local tv stations. The networks cannot reuire local affiliate to take all of their products. All outlets can select what programing they want from any source for any time slot. Cannot be dictated from the networks.
Both the Unions and the Major networks have shown themselve to be completed disinterested in engaging in ethical practices, often bordering on criminal (actually crashing the border and stting up camp several mile in on the criminality side of things)
I would definately do that, it use to be private companies. Now all of those hundreds of thousands of people, and especially their pensions, are in the federal budget. Privatizing them would be an easy step.
but dont REPLACE it with RomneyCare which unfortunately is what Willard plans to do...
A good thing to do would be to reverse the executive order allowing federal employees to unionize.
Provide a stable planning environment for business start-up and expansion. Minimal government involvement. No surprises, let the *invisible hand* do the work.
Kill the EPA and build more refineries stat.
Go through the EPA and jail selected criminals.
Remove the coal-killing legislation.
Self driving cars? No thanks.
I agree, which is why a lot of my suggestions are energy related. We cannot compete globally based upon labor rates, but we can compete on energy prices. We need to understand that and use it to our advantage. That is why I am so against wind power and all but the most practical solar. Going "green" just for the heck of it defeats our advantage.
Your choice, of course, but you will be sharing the road with them faster than you think. In fact, if you live in the Bay area, you already have been.
Repeal the criminalization of light bulbs.
Go after obama’s hidden assets gained during his presidency. That should rescue a few billion. Bill the Mooch for the vacations.
Freeze, then confiscate Al Gore’s assets and deport him to his home planet.
Put returning combat vets on the borders and in the airports.
“Freeze, then confiscate Al Gores assets and deport him to his home planet.”
Haahahaha...that would be poetic justice...Gore with frozen assets...do we have the capability to reach Assholia? Why not just throw him back in the sea like they did in free willy?
Have a HUGE lease sale on public lands in ANWR and others and use money towards federal deficit.
Have a “return profits to USA” amnesty program for corporations to return assets and investment money without any penalties.
Good suggestion. there is over a trillion dollars parked overseas by American companies that could be invested here, if the business climate and tax climate allowed it.
A self-driving car is about as appealing as artificial insemination.
And worse, handing control of your movements over to a central power, even if it’s an infallible computer, is a big mistake, a slippery slope I don’t want to go down. A self-driving car is exactly what Big Brother wants to keep the proles under control.
Do you think for a minute that your self-driving car wouldn’t be tied into a central computer capable of monitoring your every movement?
You will have to pry my steering wheel and stick shift from my cold, dead hands.
The title is silly. There is nothing Romney can do FOR the economy by spending any money. For instance ; thorium- just change the regulations, eliminating many or most (and firing the associated bureaucrats charged with enforcing the dropped regulations) to favor thorium.
That is my point. We need to focus on cutting the budget, but we can still pursue a positive agenda without spending a lot of money or creating new bureaucracies. Small regulatory changes can have a large effect on the economy by opening up new markets, or allowing competition where there currently isn't any. This is not a "Romney's Solandra" thread, where I want him to waste money "investing" on things industry could do.
Day one in the name of fairness Romney could, by executive order, direct the IRS to collect capital gains taxes only on the real, ie inflation adjusted, increases in the value of assets. It is certainly unfair that the US currently taxes inflationary gain of assets.
Removing this unfair taxation of inflation would certainly spur business formation and expansion. It would spur employment and tax revenues too.
1. Return the Dept of Education back to the states along with the 1/2 of the money saved.
2. Ditto for the EPA
3. Deregulate the railroad
4. Make three felonies equals life in prison for all states
5. Appoint real conservative constitutionalist judges to all benches
Do you think for a minute that your self-driving car wouldnt be tied into a central computer capable of monitoring your every movement?
I completely agree. However, starting in 2015, all vehicles will have black boxes which can track you. The privacy issues will happen to everyone whether or not the car is self powered. That is another issue, although I am strongly on the side of privacy.
But here's a question. Would you buy a pizza if it is delivered by a self driving car?
If he only did the first two things on your list, we would see an economic rebound like no one has seen before.
‘Why not just throw him (algore)back in the sea like they did in free willy?’
eh. . I thought we were worried about the oceans rising and flooding the coastal cities. This would of course cause that to actually come true. Not due to global warming but to glabal rescue.
AllowStop the requirement that ethanol be used in fuel for vehicles to be made from any source of ethanol, not just corn.
1.Get us out of the United Nations
2.Stop all Agenda 21 Programs such as Smart Meters
3.Change the ID used to apply for government programs to require a thumb print and a name. That will stop the fraud of using six names.
4. Make English the National Language. Stop printing forms in 44 different languages.
To go a step further allow school vouchers for any child to recieve their education. Let the public schools compete for those dollars and see how good our education gets overnight. Since the unions took over CA education has slipped from #1 in this country to #50 and in a country that has slipped from #1 worldwide to #37. AND THEY STILL WANT MORE.
May of us in Freeper land live in communities with a District Hospital that is partially supported by tax dollars. How good do you believe health would be at those institutions if everyone in the community HAD to get their healthcare only at that hospital. You would get big salaries . You would get big majestic building but no one would be competing for your business.
All Federal lands should be given to the states. The Fed need some land for a variety of uses. The feds can use emminet domain to claim land for specific use.
On-Star. Or your cell phone can be used to track you.
For now, anyway, the “black boxes” are only local monitors, without any real-time reporting capability (except for BMW, according to what I have read) or the ability to control your use of your car.
I’m not happy about it, but I have had the black box in my last 2 cars.
I am concerned about schemes to base taxation on miles driven as a replacement or supplement to fuel taxes. That will be one giant step forward to complete monitoring of a person’s movements, and something to be fought tooth and nail.
Insurance companies (e.g. Progressive) are pushing a monitor device that rewards docile behavior with reduced rates. For now, it’s voluntary. In the future, it might not be.
The first self-driving cars will, of course, offer the option of do-it-yourself driving, for traditionalists like myself. That last little bit of freedom will gradually slip away as the golden chains are tightened.
These erosions of personal freedom always come as gifts from the masters, wrapped in shiny paper and bright ribbons, with promises of lower costs, better health and safety, and as always, benefits “for the children”.
As for the pizza delivery, I would only require that the self-driven car be occupied by a good-looking android!
(Sorry for the rant!)
Withdraw from the UN, ending participation in Agenda 21 and Gun Treaty, and sell/lease the UN complex in NY to corporations.
If Romney is elected we will see a hiring boom that rivals the Industrial revolution, AND HE WON’T HAVE TO DO A SINGLE THING.
Inspire the young to start businesses that will create jobs instead just looking for jobs. Say America works when we all work together.
Deny welfare benefits for future teenage mothers and their illegitimate children. Let their parents be financially responsible for them.
Look through all the new disability recipients and toss off the fake ones. Redefine disability as not physically able to work. Drugs addicts and drunks are not disabled for life. Give them time to get clean and sober and a job.
But first fire all the Obama appointees, no matter the position and repeal all Obama executive orders, including the hiding of his records.
We should just stop forcing ethanol on our fuel system completely.
Unfortunately, Romney’s in favor of continuing the government meddling that is imposing that boondoggle on us.
Just let the Ents deal with algor. They’ll love it.
“Just let the Ents deal with algor. Theyll love it.”
He probably is a little ... too hasty for them.
Completely wrong. Ban Ethanol, Period.
Anyone who's had the opportunity to run their vehicle on Ethanol-Free gas as I have, knows they get 3-4mpg BETTER than with the ethanol CRAP the government makes us run.
Ethanol=LESS MPG, and in effect is a TAX on drivers who ultimately BUY MORE GAS to go the same miles per year, which results in NET TAXES to the Federal Government via the 5 Cent/Gallon gas tax.
Other than that, good list.
