Need help with home defense weapon (vanity)

Posted on 10/20/2012 3:50:05 PM PDT by Magnatron

We are moving to North Carolina next year from New Jersey. New Jersey has some real draconian gun laws, so I hesitated while here to buy anything aside from the .38 special I have in the house for protection. I didn't even bring my hunting guns from Michigan because of the same laws. My understanding is that North Carolina has gun laws much easier to deal with, so when we move, I'd like to bring my guns from Michigan for hunting, as well as equip our home for home defense.

I travel quite a bit for work, and I'd like to have available weapons for my wife to access if the necessity every arose. My intention is to have her fully trained on the use of these weapons, including techniques necessary for her safety and protection.

What guns would you recommend for a 105 pound woman to have available? Also, we have a 7-year-old in the house. What safe-keeping devices would you recommend to keep the guns in that would provide instant access for her should she ever need to use them?

LOL! When a perp hears the sound of a slide being racked he will be moving fast, but not as fast as a sporting clay. I doubt you would miss many sporting clays if they were as big as a man.

A can of wasp spray, the kind that shoots 20 feet.

Take her to a gun show or two, or a gun shop. Let her try on a few different weapons. My wife is also small, and she prefers a .410, the Circuit Judge specifically.

The issue is to get your wife a weapon she feels comfortable with and will use.

The only thing the bastards should be hearing this side of eternity is the sound of the safety clicking off.

I have a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun.

Get yourself one of those. And practice.

Wife needs a Ruger LCP hammerless 5 shot revolver with laser grip. She should CC it in a safety holster on her person at all times. Goes in the safe at bed time. Then, the trigger lock comes off the Mossberg 88 which is under the bed.

And, as others have wisely said, get that kid shooting a .22. I started at 7 with a single shot bolt action .22 rifle. Never, in a million years would I have taken a gun out for play because I knew there was a time and place for it.

Even Helen Keller, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder can hit a target w/ a 12ga & buck/birdshot, at 10-15ft. Sporting clay shooting are ‘nother story. :^)

The .38 special revolver is fine for home D. Its easy for novices to be safe with a revolver IMO.

And hold a Bic Lighter just 2-3” out from the nozzle; it’s an amazing flamethrower. (Have a fire extinguisher nearby!)

Especially if he loads-up his pants at the sound. LOL.

Agreed with the shotgun as best choice.
Find a place where you can try various loads and see if the 20 or 12 gauge is easiest for you to handle. BB turkey loads are a good choice. I alternate 3” 12 gauge turkey loads with 00 Buckshot in my magazine.

The idea of “no need to aim - just point and shoot” is pure BS. You HAVE to aim. Shot doesn’t spread out that quickly - unless you own a mansion and are shooting down 25 yard hallways. I recommend a tactical light be mounted on the weapon - helps in aiming and can sufficiently “dazzle” the target so that you may have a few more seconds to choose what to do.

With home invasion and subsequent shooting, you'd better have a reliable cleaning service to clean up the mess........

Just sayin' since threads of this kind never give any thought to that aspect.

Alot of good advice here. And welcome to the carolinas. The suggestions of the mossberg 500 are good ones. Wanting a long gun addition, I went with the poor mans 500 and got the Maverick 88 12G made by mossberg(The reviews tell it all). 8 rnds in case of zombie attack... Maybe you should hit one of our local firing ranges and rent some different ones and see what makes your eyes sparkle..lol

Thank RINO Christie for not having the spine to straighten out NJ’s idiotic gun laws – no guts at all. Anyway – the 38 Special will do fine. Use any of the commercial “FBI loads” – 158 grain LSWHP loaded to +P velocity – no “exotics” such as Glasers or the such. Teach the 7 year old to leave it alone. A short barreled shotgun would be fine, but in 12 gauge, not 20. Bigger payload & easier to hit with. Not a pump – the whole premise of “letting them hear me rack the slide – maybe that’ll be enough of a deterrent” is utter and complete BS. The first and ONLY sound I want an intruder to hear would be the LAST sound he ever heard – BOOM! A good semi auto makes more sense by far, especially for somebody unfamiliar with weapons – keep it loaded with one in the chamber and a full magazine. Just push off the safety and shoot to kill. Remember – shoot to kill – dead people cannot sue anybody. And DO NOT say anything more to the 911 dispatcher (you’ll be recorded and it WILL be used against you) or “Barney” (when he finally leaves Krispy Kreme and eventually shows up) other than what you look like / what you’re dressed in, that you will be waiting with your weapon in a safe condition, that you were IN FEAR FOR YOUR LIFE and that you’ll answer all questions the donut boys have AS SOON AS YOUR LAWYER IS PRESENT and not one second sooner – remember – EVERYTHING you tell the cop (who’s eagerly looking for a pat on the head or a promotion) WILL be used against you. Good luck.
