How Pretentious
This is one of my biggest pet peeves, especially when he says “Afghanistan” in the usual Americanized manner. It makes no sense whatsoever.
Not pretentious, PC. If one pronounces all place names as the natives do (so Moskova instead of Moscow, Wien instead of Vienna, “pock-e-stahn” for Pakistan, etc.) it’s pretentious. If one only pronounce place names from Muslim and Latin American countries like the natives, it’s political correctness rather than pretension.
"...he's just optimalizing"
He was a pretentious douche all night and it showed clearly.
Spoken and pronounced like a guy who traveled there on an Indonesian passport, thus claiming Indonesian citizenship, to attend a muslim jihadist camp.
This nation- me. I can’t stand listening to him.
What is it with these a-holes? Remember Ted Koppel and Knee-ker-auuugg-whaaaa back in the 80’s?
Yeah. Barry needs to be slapped across the mouth everytime he says that. I’m sure it sounds ridiculous to most REAL Americans.
It was the Norwood-Dingell moment of the debate...
I broke up with my college boyfriend when he insisted on calling James Madison’s home “Monpelliyay.” He argued that the French pronunciation was correct, even though it was an Americanized use of the word. Of course he said “Paris,” though, and not “Par-eee.” Douche.
If only it were just pretentious. It’s also arrogant, totalitarian, and anti-American in a way that’s particularly noxious in an American President.
We have a pronunciation for that country in American English, and it’s “Pack-i-stan.”
It isn’t at all about how the natives of that country pronounce it.
I don’t care that you were there, Obama. You’re an American. You’re the President of all Americans. Speak American English.
It’s our country and our language. For the Scolding Pedant-in-Chief to try to school and overrule Americans — ‘No, here is how it’s pronounced, troglodytes — is just another reason I’m counting down the days to when I can punch my bal-LOT.
Didn’t he date a POCK-E-STAHN-E at Columbia?
That was my morning laugh! Thanks!
In all honesty, I don’t have much of a problem with this if that’s the way he’s been saying the country’s name his whole life. I’m from Boston and I say VaMont, not VerMont and Missouri instead of Missura (as my cousins say it).
People like him only do this with 3rd world countries...
when is the last time this President said “ Pair-ee, France?
But Pocky-stan is where they make Pocky! and Pocky is yummy!
Good to see that you have standards. :)
Obama has lived in Hawaii, California (Occidental), New York (Columbia), Massachusetts (Harvard), and Illinois, off the top of my head.
How could he have been using that pronunciation his whole life?
No one in any of those states says POCK-ee-stahn, except maybe a few pathetic losers at the Kennedy School of Government. And you know their mamas don’t say it like that.
It’s not a regionalism like Missura; it’s strictly an affectation, pointedly meant to shame Americans and emphasize The One’s sophistication.
