A friend of mine said today that we were fools believing that we could win by having Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan give lectures on free market economics to savages. We should replace the old Serpenthead axiom “It’s the economy, stupid” with the Mark Steyn “ It’s the demographics, stupid.” Saw an interesting exit poll result. Romney carried NJ, NY, and even California among the pale faces amongst us. The truth is Romney lost this election when he criticized Obama for dramatically increasing food stamp recipients and promising to create millions of new jobs. What we thought was scoring points was scaring the majority dependent class. They saw it differantly than us,that they might have to get a job and lose their food stamps
I don’t see the demographic argument in light of the raw numbers. A truly energized turnout of 5 million more, which should have easily been in our grasp, would have crushed that argument. I ‘m coming back to my first impression. The biggest theme of the past 4 years was Obamacare and Romney was uniquely unable to fight on that battlefield. Even the “silver lining” of Roberts’ betrayal in calling it a tax was a weapon Romney could not pick up and use. But now, free of Romney, the Republicans can pick it up. There’ll be no penalty and a country to save.
