Peanut Allergies More Common in Kids from Wealthy Families

Children from wealthy families may more likely to have peanut allergies than those less well-off, a new study finds.

In the study, children ages 1 to 9 from high-income families had higher rates of peanut allergies compared with children these ages from lower income families.

The researchers analyzed information from 8,306 children and adultswhose blood samples were taken as part of a national health survey in 2005 to 2006. About 9 percent of participants had an elevated levels of antibodies to peanuts, indicating they had the potential to be allergic to peanuts.

The results add support to the hygiene hypothesis, said study researcher Dr. Sandy Yip, of the U.S. Air Force. The hygiene hypothesis is the idea that living in a cleaner environment may make people's immune systems more sensitive, and increase the prevalence of allergies.

The findings are also inline with those of a study published earlier this year, which found children living in cities were more likely to have food allergies compared with those living in rural areas, which tend to be less expensive than cities.

The study was presented this week at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology meeting in Anaheim, Calif.

I see two causes
1. Soy milk and soy in baby formula. Babies are not supposed to get this foreign protein and develop antigens to it. Soybeans and peanuts are legumes.
2. Wealthy families have cleaner homes. The human immune system was designed for less sanitary conditions. If our immune system isn't going to fight disease, it will pick other targets.

I wish I could find the study, but supposedly there exists some peanut-flavored pacifier for kids in Israel.

Conclusion? Virtually NO peanut allergies in the kids.

Surprise.

#1......concerned me as a mom. Because soy contains phytoestrogens.

Rich moms also need to create drama. Im sure their kids also have more ADD, more “Autism”, more lactose intolerance, etc etc. Examples are the leading women in the Petraeus drama. All rich moms with specialist physician husbands.

Im just sayin’

You may be on to something. But when your child vomits and then begins to not be able to breathe, the drama becomes kind of real. Just sayin’-

That makes a lot of sense. I’ve wondered about the huge increase in this allergy for awhile now. Never heard of it until about 15 years ago, and now every kid has it

I also think that soy milk is a major reason for the increase in homosexuals.

Survival of the un-fittest? Maybe. How many of them invent, design and build something? How many get their incomes from government, NGOs (nonprofits, etc.) or government-linked rackets? Time and the default process will tell.

This is ridiculous. One can be poor and still maintain a clean household — in a developed country, at least. And I know of well-off households, particularly in this current generation of parents, which seems to have far too many lazy and disorganized mothers, that are not well maintained in terms of hygiene.

I can see the headline now “CIA linked to peanut epidemic in affluent neighborhoods.”

I love peanut butter and every few weeks I have a craving for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a glass of ice cold milk.

Alas, peanut butter has a mild laxative effect on me. Is this an allergy?

Not to worry, peanut allergies will soon be a thing of the past. Thanks to Obama there will be no more wealthy families.

Agree with your conclusions; but clearly; if ‘wealthy’ families ‘breed’ peanut allergies; these should be non-existent by 2016.

But imagine the dilemma of the child from a wealthy family who’s allergic to macadamia nuts and truffles....

No, peanut allergies tend to be of the hives, swelling, throat closing variety. I’d guess it’s more fats/oils related.

Does greasy meat do the same thing to you?

Can’t be fats or oil. My girlfriend with a peanut allergy says her lips start to swell if I just breathe on her after eating peanuts. I know it’s true too. She didn’t even know I ate them, but once she felt the swelling she figured it out.
