Initial sales of the Windows 8 operating system are said to be "well below" Microsoft's internal projections.
Citing a "trusted" source, Paul Thurott of Supersite for Windows said Windows 8 is off to a weak start, but Microsoft doesn't believe sales have been affected by the software itself. Instead, the thinking in Redmond, Wash., is said to be that PC makers have offered "lackluster" designs, along with limited availability.
That disappointment with Microsoft's PC partners is said to have further reaffirmed the company's strategy with the new Surface tablet, which is the first computer designed and manufactured by the company itself.
Thurott surmises that the initial disappointment of Windows 8 is related to a number of issues, including a slumping economy, confusing range of device types, and the touch-centric interface of Windows 8 Metro.

I have upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard tomLion to Moutain Lion and never had to reinstall an app or user data. Because Apple makes the entire solution, there are fewer issues...
How much longer is MS going to provide security support for XP? Our it guys are no longer re-imaging failed laptops with XP, they put W7 on them...
I’ve no reason to switch from 7 to anything else.
I don’t have a touchscreen or any sort of smart phone or mobile device that would require those tiles, so I can’t see any reason to buy that.
The only part of my pc I bring with me when I’m not at it is my play list, and that goes on i-pod, so microsoft, dunno what to tell you.

I am getting hints that the Mac / IOS will be unified in another revision or 2, coupled with a radical UI pdate. Apple sent Scott Forrestal packing and infield hardware and User Interface design under Jony Ivey.
That explains the big jump in Apple's stock price.
If Microsoft had been smart, they’d have pulled out XP and marketed it as Windows 8.
I thought that their stock price had fallen recently. Good time to buy IMO.
I don’t think Microsoft realizes the market is changing - specifically, their market share is changing. They need something new, away from Windows; otherwise, they’ll be irrelevant or extinct in ten years....
I notice no one ever thinks enough of the articles to put thier name on them.......
I'm not sure that's entirely comparable. Snow Leopard is a 3 year old OS. I've upgraded my PC from Window 3.1 to 98 to 2000 to XP, and kept many of my applications while going through three generations of hardware (including hard drives, graphics cards, CPU's and motherboards). That's a 9 year time span.
Maybe. Depends on why it fell.
Mac has always been Apple. And their hardware has always had its aficionados (bigots if you will).
Silicon Graphics was similar in the way that it operated with IRIX. See where that got them.
Microsoft was much more promiscuous in the way that they dealt with the hardware manufacturers and never wanted to be a hardware company. Apple has always wanted to be and is both.
I like Win7 and this machine is a Win7. I have an iPhone and love it. Have an iPad and love that too. But they are toys not tools. The wife uses the iPad to surf, shop, email, etc. and it has been excellent in that capacity. Solid hardware and zero usability issues.
I have not owned a Mac PC, but have used them extensively and they are OK as far as it goes, but it’s not something I would buy.
As for Win8, I have not used it yet and have no urge to do so.
I do think that the desktop PC is dead outside of high end AutoCad NX, Solidworks, etc. applications and the new tablet type will replace it on price and functionality for most users.
I used a desktop computer for years, with a tower on the floor, and had a laptop that I could bring along when I commuted to work. But I haven’t used a desktop for years, since the chips in the laptops gained enough memory to handle all the programs I use in timely fashion.
But I do keep the laptop on my desk. Or take it with me to our summer home and use it on the desk there. Because I am a touch typist, and really, really need to use a regular keyboard and mouse—a wireless mouse in recent years.
Drove me nuts.
Now she wants GoogleChrome laptop. $249 at best buy. This thing works in the cloud!

What is irritating to me, and as programmers should know:
What harm is there in having two interfaces? On install, the thing should be able to determine if it is a desktop/laptop w/o touch capability, OR with touch capability AND kb/mouse, OR a touch dedicated machine...
If not touch capable, shell to Explorer.exe with start bar and useable file manager, if both, then inquire which is desired, and finally, if touch dedicated, shell to Metro interface.
It would hardly be an effort for MS to maintain both shells, especially since the start bar has been around forever and is already about as functional as it can be. And since both shells use the same resources it is only the interface that needs to be maintained differently...
Too simple. It feels rather like the same 'tough sh*t' attitude MS delivered when they went to that bloody useless ribbon interface in Office (and others)... And it sucks.

I have moved away from the desktop computer except for using Siemens NX software. Need the clock and FSB speed and 2 GB graphics card to run multiple monitors and the simulation support.
Mostly use the laptop now for normal business functions like spreadsheets, email, and creating presentations.
The wife uses the iPad exclusively with the keyboard case that she bought for it, and that has the standard keyboard and there is no need for a mouse.
You should look into an iPad for what you’re doing and get it with the keyboard case. You will like it....a lot.
I did DL the Classic Start Menu and it made Win8 tolerable - before I was pulling the cord out to turn off the machine! I have found that with similarly configured machines Win8 runs about 20% slower - and with an annoying sawtooth process spike.
I now know that it is available as a last resort, but I doubt that I’ll spend much time on it - if I need to actually get something done I’ll find a box with an older OS or Linux.
