Former world boxing champion Hector 'Macho' Camacho was in critical condition today after being shot in his native Puerto Rico, with his family facing the decision of taking him off life support as his condition worsened.
Doctors had said Camacho was expected to survive after he was shot in the face while sitting in a car on Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon.
However his condition worsened overnight and his heart stopped at one point, said Dr Ernesto Torres, director of the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.
'He's battling minute to minute. This is the most important fight of his life,' Dr Torres said on Wednesday.
The doctor said that two specialists will examine the boxer to determine his level of brain activity. Another man in the car, whose relationship to the 50-year-old Camacho was not immediately known, died in the attack.
At least one gunman opened fire on their vehicle in the city of Bayamon, according to police. The bullet struck Camacho in the jaw but exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae, Torres said.

Jeez. I wonder what Camacho was into.
Never bring a boxer to a gunfight!
Had to be drugs.
Whatever ... he pissed SOMEbody off.
The shooting of a top tier athlete/celebrity should be in breaking news and not in chat.
And, you forgot the SARC tag, too?
Lavender Mafia: “Yo! Pac-Man. You watchin”?
“The shooting of a top tier athlete/celebrity should be in breaking news”
Why, are they somehow more important than someone else? Go kiss ass on royalty someplace else, this is America!
Camacho sentenced for '04 burglary; could avoid jail
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) Hector "Macho" Camacho was sentenced to the maximum seven years in prison Monday for burglary, but the eight-time world champion could avoid spending time in a cell. Harrison County Circuit Judge Steve Simpson suspended six years of the sentence and said Camacho could serve one year under house arrest if authorities in Puerto Rico agree to monitor him. That would be followed by two years' probation.
That was my first guess. The neighborhood looks to be one that you wouldn't want to be caught in at 12 noon much less at night outside a bar.
Sounds likely ... from the article;
Camacho has a career record of 79-5-3, with his most recent fight coming in 2009.
Drug and alcohol problems have trailed Camacho since the prime of his boxing career.
He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. During the arrest in January 2005, police found him in possession of ecstasy.
A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail after violating his probation.
He divorced from his wife several years ago after she filed multiple domestic abuse complaints against him.
From this, it would appear that he would have been safer in prison. Then again, boxing is not conducive to long-term brain power. Something about repetitive concussions.

Was in San Juan once. Except for the resorts, it looked too much like my ‘hood.
Dear Lord please spare this man and let him be your humble servant the rest of his days.
Give him another chance for your saving grace, amen.

Must have used Lee Harvey Oswald’s gun with magic bullets.
