GLEN BURNIE, Md.- Maryland's Motor Vehicle Association has unveiled a 30-foot statue of a crash test dummy outside of its headquarters in Glen Burnie.
John Kuo, administrator for the Motor Vehicle Association, said the bright yellow statue is meant to serve as a safety reminder for the state's motorists, The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday.
Kuo, who said both of his siblings were killed in a car crash when he was 12, said the 500 road-related deaths last year was a record low for the state.
"Can you imagine, we only lost 500 people and that's a reason to be happy?" Kuo asked. "Why do we accept the loss of life on our roads?"
The 2-ton statue made its debut during the summer at Baltimore's Artscape festival and was put in storage for a few months until the Motor Vehicle Association chose its final location.
How much did they rob taxpayers for that??
Looks like the right guy to put in charge of the Maryland DMV.
Democrats immediately plan to run him in the primaries.
Centuries from now, archaelogists will sift through the remains of our civilization and conclude we were idiots.
Yeah, but actual factors (population, auto ownership, etc.) aside, IIRC, the yearly highway death toll for the US is typically around 21K-26K.
Five hundred (~ 1/50 of the totatl) for any given populous state shouldn't be a surprise.
Throw in Baltimore, DC, and I-95/Beltway, drunken US pols, and drunken foreign officials, I think they should be happy with such a low statistic.
We already have a crash dummie. His name is Juan Williams!
It was paid for with federal funds so thanks everyone!
We’re all crash test dummies now.
I think this is a great idea. The use of crash test dummies and the data collected from them have brought about engineering improvements that have saved countless lives. There is absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging that.
The should put Martin O’Malley’s head on it and just call it Dummy.
Ping!
This is not the droid we were looking for...
After the last election, I think that's a given.
We had Vince & Larry for years and they were a lot smarter than this bozo!
Wow. Somebody’s pet project funded by 52% of the country. Just imagine that times 300 million.
