Because it was funny! "Please to remove from street." Alan Arkin and Carl Reiner were hilarious. And maybe your mom had lived in a small town of that era. Little towns really do have their Muriel Evanses who call the cops over any little thing!

How could I have forgotten Galaxy Quest! That movie is a hoot.

Office Space is a treasure.
That’s my choice for Fields’ best. The Bank Dick, You’re Telling Me, You Can’t Cheat An Honest Man, The Man On The Flying Trapeze, Poppy, et al are good movies but It’s A Gift is perhaps the funniest movie ever made IMHO.
Nothing will ever beat this (not even the unintentional comedy of a historical catastrophe that I mentioned earlier):
