'Dear God will you please take care of my dog'
Daily Mail ^ | 24 November 2012 | Nina Golgowski

Posted on 11/24/2012 3:20:00 PM PST by EinNYC

When Abbey, the beloved 14-year-old dog of the Scrivener family died, one little girl's grief was eased in the most touching of fashions.

Telling her parents that she wanted to write a letter to God, four-year-old Meredith dictated a note to her mother and together they traveled down to their post office in Brook Hollow, Texas to post it.

Two weeks later to their amazement, the family returned home to find a package wrapped in gold on their front porch addressed to 'Mer' and signed 'God, and one of his special angels.'

Inside the mysterious package was a book titled 'When a Pet Dies' by Fred Rogers and note, clearly sent in reply to the little girl's plea to God to 'please take care of my dog'

'Dear Meredith,' read the attached letter.

'Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog.

'Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

'I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

'Love, God.'

This probably won’t help with clearing up the blurry screen.

IMO any culture that hates dogs doesn’t deserve to exist.

1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.....

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me. ...

3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being......

4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you......

5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me......

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.....

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.....

9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old......

10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so....... Signed :

...YOUR DOG

Our Mademoiselle was a longhair white tabby who joined our daughter when Jenn was three. They were inseperable and grew up together. When I took Mamsy to the vet for her last trip, Jenn was away at college and Mamsy was 19.

I spent her last ten minutes of her life petting her and remembering so many years of memories before she just faded peacefully. I decided not to ever have a pet again, but you know how that goes. After eight years, I now have three; two cats and a dog. We will see.

Oh my. Besides reaching for a tissue, I sent a little gratitude prayer up to God for the beautiful soul who found Meredith's letter and sent such a perfect reply to her.

Also at the link is the text of the letter that Meredith wrote to God, as follows:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

I really like that, instead of asking God why He let her dog die, Meredith wanted to tell God she was happy that He had let her have Abbey as her dog. Such a wise child.

All of my tortie and whites (5 out of 6 cats I’ve had) have had black masks and blazes. Jester spoiled me for cats with red blazes, which is very rare. She spoiled me for a lot of things in cats. She was a wild kitten who I know was especially created for me. It was as if an artist had painted her, she was so perfectly marked in just the way I like. Took me 10 days to catch her, as she was part cat and part Einstein. Took me another 10 days or so until she was mine. I kept her confined to my bathroom so that my other cat could become used to her smell and the whole idea of her. I’d go into the bathroom as though walking on eggs every time I had to go in there. She would cower behind the toilet. On the 10th day or so, I went into my bathroom and found the kitten not behind the toilet, but sitting on the seat. “Meowrrrrrrr” came out of her tiny throat. That’s “Hello” in cat. From that moment on, I knew she was truly mine. She slept with me every night for the rest of her life. And for 3 days after she died, I distinctly felt a weight behind my head on my pillow, I kid you not. I think she wanted me to know she was OK wherever her little soul went. Kefira is a worthy successor, also a former street waif. And don’t they look astonishingly alike, considering no two tortie and whites or calicos are the same?

This is clearly the fault of a Vast Doberman Conspiracy.

My screen is blurry too.

About five years ago we took our 14 Year Old Chow to the Vet for the “shot” when he was no longer able to get up on his own. He was having difficulty walking and we kept hoping that he would improve, although we knew the inevitable was upon us.

Looking back on it now, I would think about having a Vet come to the House as you did. This was the first time we ever had to put down a pet and it was one of the saddest days in our lives.

In hindsight, loading the dog into the car on a makeshift bed and making the 20 minute drive to the Vet made the experience even more depressing. The only upside is that our Dog loved the people that worked at the Vet’s Office. Some of the staff members were almost as upset as we were.

I’ve grieved and suffered with the death of each of our eight dogs and one cat. It never gets easier. They were family, loyal, loving, some bird dogs, some protectors and all great companions.

Along with everything else in sight, 'Halla's been chewing the backbone wires.

So yes, it IS part of The Vast Doberman Conspiracy.

Big Dog is watching you.

[disapprovingly, I might add]

Clearly Meredith’s Post Office is not staffed by graduates of the Grinch school of postal workers that graduated the staffers at MY Post Office. This is such a sweet story that I hope that every little girl, or boy, who loses a beloved pet has caring folks at her Post Office to handle her mail.

During the times most Americans were enjoying that series, I was living abroad without a teevee, w/ just radio and the VOA and the BBC to stay in touch w/ Western events. Thanks for the link. I was searching to see what my *favorite cousin* was up to lately, and found she had referenced the story in her column. I didn't want anyone to think I was pimping. LOLZ :D

Maybe you should print out the story and hand it to the various postal workers at your Grinch P.O. Might enlighten them some.

That would make a good Support Free Republic ad.

Something like:

Big Dog is watching you.

Support Free Republic.

(It’s the only activity of which Disapproving Doberman, in fact, approves.)
