College is hard enough without having to worry about serious crime. Yet crime is a reality on and around many college campuses.
The FBI's Unified Crime Report identified 2,696 violent crime incidents and 87,160 property crime incidents on and around college campuses in 2011.
We ranked the most dangerous colleges by averaging FBI crime data per capita from 2008 to 2011 for schools with enrollment over 10,000. Schools were ranked based on a combination of violent crime rank and property crime rank, with violent crime weighted four times higher.
NOTE: Some people have objected to our use of FBI data because (1) not all schools participate in the survey and (2) some schools are more aggressive than others in reporting crime in neighboring noncampus areas.
In response to criticism, we prepared an alternate list based on on-campus crimes tracked for the Clery Act. We are happy to report, however, that this alternate ranking produced remarkably similar results — suggesting that both lists are good at identifying dangerous colleges. For instance, two schools which objected vocally to our original list — UCLA and UC-Riverside — were also named among the most dangerous colleges based on this new data set.
We have included responses submitted by various schools on their respective slides.

MIT is in a lousy area in Cambridge. Between Central Square and East Cambridge, and right off Mass. Ave. Harvard doesn’t have too many problems because it’s campus cops are real deputized law enforcement, some of whom are plainclothes and hard to spot. Not the glorified mall cops you see on most campuses.
We could rename them degrees in "Useful Idiotry", then they'd fit right in.
I would like to know how they define the college boundaries. University of Chicago has a LOT of “Chicago” between the Quadrangle and the farthest dorm. While Hyde Park is in better shape than the areas South and West, it is not without problems. I am alsop doubtful that campuses like Fordham’s would not make the list, unless, again, there is a narrow definition of what constitutes “campus”.
#11 Georgia Institute of Technology - Atlanta, GA. Well known by locals that the surrounding areas of GT are bleeding the criminal element onto campus.
#9 University of South Alabama - Mobile, AL. City population ~48% black.
#4 Duke University - Durham, NC. City has a record of racial strife. Recall the 2006 Duke lacrosse case.

#6 WIU in Macomb Il. Just down the road from me. I knew they’d make the top 10. I have had LEO freinds in Macomb and from what I hear the stats are low.
A target rich environment with a guarantee of it being a gun free zone. Add to it the likelihood of the victims resisting or fighting back is very low to non-existent, and these are the results you get.
Most of these kids on these campuses walk around with a thousand bucks of stuff in their possession, even more in their rooms.

UCLA more violent than USC? I thought the Trojan campus was in the middle of Compton or something. How is that possible?
Not like back in my college days when all I had was a black-and-white portable TV, a transistor radio (but it did pick up shortwave!) and a crappy dorm fridge. As for walking around money, puh-leeze.
An official at one of the schools on the list has noted that FBI has repeatedly warned against using its crime data to rank the safety of campuses. So Business Insider’s credibility takes a hit imo.
It wasn't always that way. When it was founded in 1880, USC was out in the country. In the 1880's and 1890's, students commuting to the campus by street car from downtown LA would pass their time shooting rabbits in the fields along the way.

MIT is shocking. Massachusetts has very violent crime rates overall, and MIT is in majority non-Hispanic, white neighborhood of an affluent city (Cambridge). Most minorities are Asians... and you can guess why. There is easy access to affordable clubs and pubs in very wealthy neighborhoods. I can’t imagine where the crime comes from. Unless they’re counting MIT students’ pranks.
You had a TV and a fridge? Luxury! I had a portable stereo record player, it did have swing out speakers, though.
Get inside and it is one of the most beautiful campuses anywhere with 1840's era architecture, landscaping and the works. We took a wrong turn getting out of her graduation last June and went through a rather scary part of town to get back on the interstate.
John Hopkins is another one. Beautiful campus on the inside and well patrolled, but get a couple of blocks away and you are in some bad, bad parts of Baltimore.
I’ll bet Southern Utah University is one of the safest. I’ve seen students openly carrying rifles on the campus—apparently to go hunting or on the way to do target practice.
Just browsing the list, I see many dangerous campuses with a high population of MUYs in the neighborhood. In the case of MIT, it may be the type of soft targets where predators look for their prey.
