McCartney: Embree's firing racist

Former Colorado coach Bill McCartney said racism was a factor in Jon Embree's firing from the Buffaloes head position after only two years on the job in Boulder.

In a radio appearance, McCartney said the school did not give Embree, who is black, the same opportunity to build up his program as his white predecessors had at Colorado and that race motivated the administration's failure to stick with Embree.

Here's a more likely reason Embree got the axe....

Not to mention anybody in their right mind knew when Colorado joined the Pac-12 or whatever it's called these days..they would be getting killed on a regular basis in football.

Colorado lost to Sacramento State. ‘Nuff said.

Everything is about race. I thought it was the three wins in two seasons that got him fired. The guy from Auburn got the boot too, and he had more wins. Sure, he won a national championship, but that was with players recruited by the other coach.

Perhaps the NCAA should require that opposing teams spot Colorado two touchdowns before the beginning of each game in the interest of “fairness.”

I don’t know if Embree is a good coach in a bad situation, but I do know coaches and managers get fired with better records than he had. Yogi Berra was fired as manager of the Yankees in 1964 despite his team getting into the World Series. They didn’t win, and Berra got the axe. I don’t know what the situation in Colorado is, but here in Wisconsin if the coach doesn’t win at either U-Wisconsin or the Packers, they can expect to get the axe after only 2-3 seasons. I imagine other places it’s quicker than that.

So, in around the last 30 years, the European White population of America was about 75+%, with about 10+% African American. So about a 1 in 8 or so ratio could be representative of the country, roughly on average.

So, tell me what is wrong with this picture for its time (and representative tolerance):

McCartney is not doing Embree any favors by whipping out the race card. Embree tacitly agreed in his presser, but he should have rebuked McCartney instead, and here is why.

ESPN-TV showed a graphic that (IIRC) of the 41 collegiate black head coaches who were fired in the past decade, only one (Ty Willingham) got rehired to the same position by a new school (ND to UDub), and that tenure is over, too.

AD’s are now less likely to hire or re-hire a minority coach if the race-card effort-to-blackmail (no pun intended) looms, with either a lawsuit or inflated buyout the probable conclusions. It shouldn’t be that way. Unfortunately, it is, but the AD’s are not to blame.

In 2012, Colorado was 1-11. Their opponents averaged 46 points a game against them versus 17.8 for Colorado. In sum, they lost by almost 30 points a game.

They were 3-9 in 2011. Any coach should be fired with a record like that. Things are getting worse, not better.

Any coach should be fired with a record like that.

In McCartney's first three seasons as head coach at CU he went 2-8-1, 4-7 and 1-10. He was then given a contract extension.

He was very fortunate to receive an extension. Most coaches would have lost their jobs. Look at what happened to Gene Chizik at Auburn. He won the national championship two years ago.

I could be mistaken, but I doubt if McCartney voted for Obama. He’s a conservative icon in many quarters.
