Something pretty massive happened there, and not in the too distant past!

An explanation for the region’s formation can be found here: http://www.threeimpacts-twoevents.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/SIMULTANEOUS-IMPACTS7.pdf

Seems like this area is just ripe for action to.

Those quakes are magmatic that I am sure of.

Thanks! Interesting and a keeper doc. I totally agree with meteor strikes contributing to much more earth change than has been given credit. One look at the moon should convince anyone of that. I don't agree with the trough theory from oblique strikes, they seem to be quite rare on other bodies.

IMO, it's more likely the result of rapid plate drift and fracture due to the massive pressure waves generated. :)

So what ya think is causing all this increase magma flow? We're north of 70 above ground eruptions this year alone! Likely many more than that under the oceans...

earthquake-report.com has this for volcanic activity for yesterday (re: the quakes recently north of Ridgecrest)

“Intense swarm seismicity continued overnight beneath the Coso Volcanic Field (CA). Event magnitudes ranged from M0.0 to M2.5. The activity has shallowed overall and migrated eastward from its original position beneath the rhyolite dome cluster. The dark cluster of epicenters in the upper central portion of the SCEC map represents the Coso earthquake swarm.”

Since the Coso Volcanic Field is used for geothermal power, are the quakes there similar to The Geysers injection quakes or magma movement?

The activity has shallowed overall and migrated eastward

That's interesting. Sounds a lot like the activity around El Hierro

This area should be pretty well mapped from seismic 3-D surveys, so it's strange that the experts aren't putting out more information on that. I would think they have a good idea of what's causing it.
