James Bond was far from the suave, English gent portrayed in the 007 films, but rather a more troubled, heavy-drinking character, the new Bond author claims.

William Boyd, the novelist famed for 'Any Human Heart', and responsible for coming up with the next Bond novel in the Ian Fleming series, said that Bond's true character, until now, had been underplayed.

**SIGH** I somewhat agree, but please do not turn the next novel into Psychobabble.

William Boyd, the novelist famed for 'Any Human Heart'

That's not famed.

This is famed.

At least the comments at the site are true to Ian Fleming’s Bond, and they do NOT like this wuss’s idea of changing James Bond.

Ted Kennedy was a massive boozer portrayed as a senator by the press.
Real life is real life. It just depends on your perspective.

He'll have to be William "Books" Boyd to distinguish him from William "Hopalong" Boyd and William "Stage" Boyd.

(I used to be a writer for a movie encyclopedia...I had to keep these things straight)

Yes, I have no problem with that. But YOLT was the penultimate novel after OHMSS, after the death of Bond’s wife. Bond was generally depressed because of it but tried to move on.

It was also written near the time of Fleming’s death when his spirits and health were in decline. Some of it due to the Thunderball lawsuit. The novel was published only 5 months before Fleming died.

I might be wrong but in Casino Royale when they put him on the chair and tortured him with their novel technique(Belgium’s)?.
I always got the idea that he became sterile because of the torture and was depressed,so he played around and when he did fall in love she was taken from him.
His first love committed suicide going into the water and never coming back alive.
All that is left is a very angry depressed Bond who buries it all by fighting for his country without care whether he lives or dies.

Le Chriffre threaten to cut his junk off after torturing his testicles with a carpet cleaner. No mention was ever made of sterility. However, you forgot in YOLT Bond gets Kissy Susuki pregnant before heading off to Vladivostok.

At the end of Diamonds are Forever he wanted to marry Tiffany Case but by the time FRWL roles around, she leaves him for an American Marine. Vesper Lynd killed herself with pills and he was angry, he was angry at Vesper “The Bitch is Dead” and he was angry at Smersh.

Don’t forget Bill “Cowboy Rambler” Boyd! He was the singer who appeared in the short series of cheapie wartime b-westerns from PRC alongside Art Davis and Lee Powell, the trio known as “The Frontier Marshals.”
