Vanity: I'm in the market for a NEW assault rifle. Any suggestions?

Posted on 12/15/2012 10:39:03 PM PST by RC one

I already own 2 AR15s, an Uzi and an Armalite AR10 so this is nothing more than a big FU to the liberals really. I'm leaning towards a bushmaster varminter. any other suggestions.

How about a Thompson sub machine gun?

I got to shoot one with the Cutts compensator. I ran through all my 'daddy is playing' money in about a minute. That includes reloading the stick mag. Once.

Very fun. Not very practical.

If you’re looking for a carbine and this is the last rifle that you’re going to get, get your hands on a Springfield Armory Soccom II. You will rule the block. It is one nasty piece of hardware.

Holy smokes, Stag Arms has a piston AR15 for $1,145. I think we might be on to something here.

$1,145 bucks for a stag arms piston AR15 is hard to beat. I think I'm sold. I can barely afford to shoot the 7.62 rifle I already own anyways.

Sounds like you have a fine grouping already. I might suggest spending the money on some more ammo instead.

Good luck with it. I think that it’s wise to go with a piston.

And yeah, 7.62 ammo can add up. I’m just kind of partial to it.

AR-15 is great but they need to be babied against dust and grime. Ruger Mini-14 or a Russian Saiga rifle chambered in .223 or .308. Loose fit parts and capable of operating when you have no time to clean it.

I won't ask which two. But the air is sorta thin at the top, and mostly, it's variations on a theme. Eugene Stoner is dead, John Moses Browning is dead, Kalashnikov is alive, but barely breathing, and probably drunk on cheap vodka, individuals designing firearms to sell to the government is pretty much a dead letter these days.

I'll stand by all I listed as having been owned by me, and enjoyed as accurate technical equipment. Whichever of the two you were thinking about.

that's why I'm leaning towards the stag arms piston AR15. the gas impingement system of the AR15 has always been its weakest link. I've been wanting a piston AR15 but the price has always been prohibitive; however, this Stag Arms model 8 piston driven AR15 seems like a whole lotta gun for $1,145. comes with flip up front and rear sites too. I was an expert rifleman in the infantry so I'm partial to the platform too. That's why I went with the AR10T over an FAL or a HK or an M1a (plus the price was right).

I am not biting the AR fever one bit, though I have two. My choice is the M1A with its .308 cartridges. If I were to get something for close quarters I would check out the FAL and or a different round like the 6.8 anything but the .223 and its jam syndrome.

Sorry to say but I do NOT want a weapon that is prone to jam, though in some recent events I am glad they did. I can be smarter and can see designs that may look inferior tend to much more reliable.

The new Ruger Mini-30’s are far more accurate than before, extremely reliable, and ideal.....not too expensive either....scope mounts included.....throw a red-dot on there and you are in for some great shooting......

IF you can find one..........

In stainless, of course.........

I haven't had a lot of jamming issues with my gas impingement AR15s but I completely respect your need for 7.62 mm. Nothing shoots through heavy cover better although it still doesn't penetrate as well as I'd like if you follow me. I went with the Armalite for my BBBR and I'm happy enough with it. I have a 24" bull barrel though so it's a battle rifle second and a sniper rifle first. I'm gonna look into a second carbine upper for it and then go for the Stag arms model 8 which I expect to be quite reliable since it isn't venting super heated dirty gasses into the breech/bolt face area. I saw a demo where the bolt carrier actually decreased in temperature after a 30 round magazine was put through it. I have heard some negative feedback on the M1A FWIW.

I have a 10/22. It and the ruger .22 pistols are essentials IMO. I never really took to the AK/SKS platforms. I respect them but I never had the ambition to support the caliber or the platform. I like tack drivers-rifles that can shoot .2-.3 MOA out to around 400 yards. That kind of accuracy should be the standard we all strive for any more IMHO. The days of casually shooting a case of ammo up at the range are over. training needs to focus on cold bore accuracy and precision.

I don’t own an AR and have no desire to. I guess you could say I’m an AK snob for all the usual reasons. WASR10 works for me.
