Try to buy it from a private citizen so there are no records for the government to have.

If that’s legal where you live.

Don’t do it! Guns kill people don’t’cha know? If you are foolish enough to ignore this advice then find the guns with the biggest clips that hold the most popular and most easily attainable ammunition.

Remington has screwed up the .22-250s, so I won't recommend that. Not that it's a scary military style weapon.

I had an AR-15 in 7.62x39 special order from Colt that was sorta nice, but I sold it to pay for school.

The Ruger 10-22 is hard to beat for just plain cheap fun, and can be tricked out to be a tack driver at 100 yards. Also good for kids to learn on.

I don't really care for Soviet Block style weapons, even though I can use them in a stupor, but a cheap (machined receiver, not stamped) SKS can be some cheap shooting fun at the range.

I don't really have any suggestions on the type of rifle, but I'd seriously recommend looking at purchasing it at a flea market or gun show.

FYI, there's a big gun show in Louisville, Kentucky on December 28-30 at the Fair and Expo Center. Just get there early, because the lines are always extremely long and extremely slow.

I bought an AK-47 on 11/7 as a 2nd vote...I chose it because it’s a favorite with liberals as far as banning goes. It’s kind of ironic that they drove me to buy one by their incessant harping on the issue.

More accurate than I thought, but man, it gets hot.

Sounds like you have a fine grouping already. I might suggest spending the money on some more ammo instead.

AR-15 is great but they need to be babied against dust and grime. Ruger Mini-14 or a Russian Saiga rifle chambered in .223 or .308. Loose fit parts and capable of operating when you have no time to clean it.

I am not biting the AR fever one bit, though I have two. My choice is the M1A with its .308 cartridges. If I were to get something for close quarters I would check out the FAL and or a different round like the 6.8 anything but the .223 and its jam syndrome.

Sorry to say but I do NOT want a weapon that is prone to jam, though in some recent events I am glad they did. I can be smarter and can see designs that may look inferior tend to much more reliable.

The new Ruger Mini-30’s are far more accurate than before, extremely reliable, and ideal.....not too expensive either....scope mounts included.....throw a red-dot on there and you are in for some great shooting......

IF you can find one..........

In stainless, of course.........

FWIW...Bushmaster may be in big trouble; a self-inflicted wound after they paid out a sizable settlement after the DC shootings. I can't imagine the enormity of what the class action suit for this event will be.

The manufacturer and dealer of the rifle used in the Washington, D.C.-area sniper shootings agreed Wednesday to pay $2.5 million in a settlement with victims and victims' families.

The settlement with Bushmaster marks the first time a gun manufacturer has agreed to pay damages to settle claims of negligent distribution of weapons, said Jon Lowy, a lawyer with the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. He helped argue the case. He said the settlement with Bull's Eye Shooter Supply is the largest against a gun dealer.

''These settlements send a loud and clear message that the gun industry cannot turn a blind eye to how criminals get their guns," Lowy said.

Bushmaster Firearms of Windham, Maine, agreed to pay $550,000 to eight plaintiffs. Bull's Eye Shooter Supply of Tacoma, where the snipers' Bushmaster rifle came from, agreed to pay $2 million.

Well, an AK is a logical choice. You can opt for the 7.62x39 original or the 5.45x39 current version.

Rigid stock or folding stock. Stamped or milled receiver. Russian, Bulgarian, Czech, Romanian, Chicom or other variants.

Heck get one of each and start a collection.

I have 2 AR-15s too. A Colt A2 and a Bushmaster M4. The Bushmaster is flat earth with Magpul furniture and is sweet. I've been toying with the idea of getting a .22LR AR-15 to play with. The Mossberg below has a MSRP fo just over $400. Street price probably around $325 or so. A lot less expensive to shoot than .223/5.56.
