How the Chargers can make the playoffs (really)

It is nearly official now.

On Thursday night, the Bengals halfway-hammered the final nail in the Chargers' playoff coffin with a win over the Eagles. It made San Diego's chances to reach the postseason even murkier with the necessary road becoming crystal clear.

This is a seven-game parlay.

If one result does not happen, a Chargers playoff berth is busted.

• Sunday - Chargers win (vs. Panthers); Steelers lose (at Cowboys).

• Week 16 - Chargers win (at Jets); Bengals lose (at Steelers).

• Week 17 - Chargers win (vs. Raiders); Steelers lose (vs. Browns); Bengals lose (vs. Ravens).

This would position the Chargers, Bengals, Steelers and possibly some combination of the Jets, Bills, Browns and Dolphins, at 8-8, in a tie for the second of two AFC wild-card spots.

As long as the Browns (5-8) don't win out to become part of this tiebreaker, the Chargers would make it through.

The first tiebreaker eliminates multiple teams in the same division. The Bengals are out with the Steelers defeating them in each of their head-to-head matchups. The Chargers would then win the tiebreaker over the Steelers because of their win last Sunday in Pittsburgh.

If the Jets, Bills or Dolphins were involved at 8-8, the Chargers would survive.

They'd own a conference record-advantage over the Bills and Dolphins and a head-to-head win over New York.

The Chargers can't get past the Browns because of their Week 8 loss in Cleveland. Unlike the Bengals, the Browns would survive the AFC North tiebreaker with their head-to-head win percentage against the Steelers and Bengals, advancing the Browns to the stage where the Chargers' head-to-head loss becomes relevant.

It should go without saying.

It is highly unlikely the Chargers make the playoffs, falling short for the third straight year.

According to makeNFLplayoffs.com, the Bengals' win Thursday night dropped the odds of a San Diego postseason berth from 1.5 to 0.6 percent.

Winning a lot of games is usually the best way to make the playoffs.

This “if a beats b or ties c AND q beats r and y beats z” crap just gives everyone one a headache.

If you need others to win/lose to make the playoffs you don’t belong there.

The talk these days is that my New England Patriots are the best team in the NFL!

Hillary could have used the headache excuse instead of pretending to fall and pretending a concussion.

It's happened once before for my Bolts, but a bridge too far this year. Gotta get rid of Norv Turner and A.J. Smith before good things can happen. And if the Spanos clan moves the franchise to L.A., then good riddance to bad rubbish.

The most surprising thing about your post is that my pathetic Bills have a chance too.

How the Chargers can make the playoffs (really)

Goodell (who is my nominee for worst NFL commissioner of all time) is proposing expanding the playoff pool yet again. At this rate, there's good reason to believe every team will be in the playoffs every season, no need for doubts.

I’d agree with that and also get rid of the GM.

Now they are down 14-0 in first quarter. Former Charger Mike Tolbert has scored two first quarter touchdowns in first quarter. Ryan Matthews has scored one touchdown this year. Way to go AJ! Philip Rivers fumbled inside his own 20 yard line. Oi ve! Qualcomm Stadium is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop.

21-0 near end of 1st half. Rivers has 45 yards passing. If the Chargers needed three victories to have any playoff shot, I think they may need all 16 of next season’s games to do it.

If the Spanos’ really wanted to keep the Chargers in San Diego, they would fire Turner and Smith now, and go quickly for Cowher or Gruden. But they want them to suck so bad that the city & fans will say no way to a new stadium. That is the trigger that will send the team to L.A.
