Looking to beat Feinstein's ban -- AR-15 Recommendations? (Vanity)
FR ^ | 12/18/2012 | SnakeDoctor

Since I've been hearing rumblings about Feinstein reviving her dumbassed assault weapons ban, and I have limited confidence in the spine of the GOP Congress -- I'm in the market for an AR-15. My wife was going to get me a crossbow or 30-06 sniper rifle for my 10th wedding anniversary this month (she's definitely a keeper) ... but neither of those are likely to be banned, so I'll move the AR up the list.

I looked at a local tactical firearms dealer yesterday evening. They had a DPMS/Panther Arms military-spec AR-15 with a rail system in 5.56 for a little less than $750 ... which is quite a bit less than I expected. I don't know much about DPMS/Panther Arms. They also had a Stag Arms, not sure of the price, though.

I want a good all-purpose assault rifle. Preferably something that is good both long-range and short, and with the ability to handle attachments, sights, scopes, foregrips, lights, etc.

From the guns I have worked on, Stag has better parts and fit, both will work, but I would go with the Stag to start.

Your tactical decision for carbine over shotgun for CQC I also give a hearty thumbs up. The minimal recoil, higher round capacity and faster follow up shots out of a Kel Tec Sub2000 are the reason I sold my pump shotguns. The Sub2k shares same 33 rd happy sticks as my Glock 9mm.

I’d recommend an AR-10 or a Saiga. A .223 round is simply crap IMHO and very expensive.

Magazines can be expensive for some AR-10 variants - I would recommend an FAL instead (but then, I used to build them ;>). I agree that Saiga's are a great option when it comes to AKM-type rifles (until very recently, I owned a .223 Saiga that I legally 'converted' many years ago to use Galil mags & standard AKM furniture). I would suggest that .223 is NOT "crap" (civilians are NOT limited to FMJ or OTM ammunition), and it most certainly is not expensive, particularly when compared to comparable .308/7.62 NATO ammo. And of course, I no longer own any firearms, the ownership of which might be affected by any proposed legislation. As always, this post is offered only as an opinion, YMMV, FWIW, etc...

;>)

Consider something NFA. Try policeguns.com for barely used Colt M4/LE (an AR15 as close to a real M4 as you can get) with 11.5” barrel. Around $1200 plus $200 transfer tax. Love mine.

Check out Rock River Arm's LAR-15 Tactical II.

Comes loaded with front and rear sights, front grip and two 30rd magazines. Great rifle (not "assault weapon.")

I’ve got a Stag AR-15 and just bought a Sig 522 last week. I am now looking at the Sig 556...anyone have one that wants to advise me what they think of the rifle?

You better invest in a whole bunch of high capacity mags too, since they’ll be at the top of the agenda for the gun grabbers.

You sure got that right! I was at my favorite gun shop on Saturday and the place was packed. I managed to find the last 3 high capacity magazines for my HnK USP9 ($45/ea.) and a few for my LAR-15 ($30/ea.) The rest was all ammunition, which was in rapidly dwindling supply!

Target practice and outdoor battles, if it comes to that. I already have a handgun for indoor defense. Thank you for the info!

A poodle shooter is a derogatory term coined probably in Vietnam to describe the M16 and now other look-a-likes chambered for the relatively low powered .223 as compared to the more powerful and longer range .308 or .30-06.

I prefer the term “sport utility rifle”.

Check out the COLT 6920 MP-B. Carried by many PDs. I have one. You would have no problem with carry weight, recoil, etc. Problem is finding one...now.

Jake's Gun Reviews or COLT itself as well as many individual reviews on line. Not saying it's better than the rest, but and excellent weapon.
