Mystery of dogs leaping from 'suicide' bridge

Over the last 50 years dozens of pet dogs have leapt from the 50ft bridge for no apparent reason, usually on clear sunny days. Each of the dogs jumped from the same spot between two parapets on the right-hand side. In 2005 the problem was so bad that 5 dogs jumped to their deaths off the bridge within the space of 6 months. The SSPCA ( Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ) considers the matter a 'heartbreaking mystery'.

Many theories have been proposed to explain these peculiar circumstances. Some people believe that the dogs have jumped because the bridge is haunted, they they were perhaps lured by an otherworldly scent. One story suggests that in 1994, a local man threw a baby from the bridge because he believed him to be the anti-Christ. Celtic mythology also attributes an otherworldly feel to the area with Overtoun being considered a 'thin place' between Heaven and Earth

The ancient Greeks thought only dogs could see the Witch Goddess Hecate.

I guess some nights their dogs would see hear or smell something and bark at it. The person would go outside and see nothing. They just naturally assumed it was Hecate since only the dogs saw it.

We have a doorway that spooks our dogs. One has to back through it after getting her nerve up. The other hugs the wall and bolts through. We had another would not go at all (120 lb Newfy mix so there wasn’t much use it trying to force him) We have never figured out what scares them.

Chihuahuas have on a few occasions jumped from their owners arms, resulting in death.. I think the catalyst is FEAR. A dog walking on a bridge might be so fearful that they choose to exit the situation without regard to the consequences. It’s fear.

My daughter and her husband were recently on Mt. Hood with their golden retriever, Mason. He was standing by them and suddenly, for no apparent reason, he leaped over the brick wall.

They both looked over the wall, and he was sitting on the only bit of earth there was. Everywhere else it was straight down. Fortunately her husband was able to rescue him. They keep Mason on a leash all the time now. The dog is about 8 years old and is very well trained. Dogs can be unpredictable.

"One story suggests that in 1994, a local man threw a baby from the bridge because he believed him to be the anti-Christ."

Since it's a story, why not make it 1961 instead of 1994?

Whereas humans perceive three primary colors (red, yellow, blue)

I think you meant Red, Green and Blue (RGB).

Yellow = Green and Red.

Merry Christmas!!

Primary colors are Red Yellow and Blue.

Yellow and Blue makes green. Red and Green are compliments, side by side they make each other look brighter but mixed together they make ick!

True, I had a husky/golden mix that hated walking on gravel - she preferred carpeting and freshly mowed grass. They're only human, you know.

Nope. Green = Blue + Yellow. Maybe your color wheel needs recalibration :-)

Also in the original “Vacation”, Clark ties the pooch to the bumper then drives away.

You are never quite sure if it was just a mistake or not.

Yellow and Blue makes green.

ug, you're correct. What was I thinking....

Went a looked up primary colors, seems things have changed a bit as far what the definitions are, depending on what profession you're speaking of.

Thanks to you both. I did know about less acuity in the red range, but not about the curly tails and I have had both Samoyeds and Akitas.

I know my dogs are very aware of the tiniest movement and have good peripheral vision and, of course, excellent smelling ability. Great hearing, too.
