LOS ANGELES (AP) - Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.

His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman’s would-be suitor in “Tootsie.”

Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as heard the audience laughing.

Wow... didn`t know that about about Durning... D-Day and Battle of the Bulge.. They were simply a different and better breed of man.

Could you imagine any of these candy-assed modern Hollywood liberals going to war? They`d run away screaming in utter terror at the prospect of breaking a nail.

RIP, Mr. Durning...

You are correct sir, a different time and a different breed of MEN!

You don’t have to go to hollywood to find a pansy...Look no further than what passes for “leaders” these days..willie clinton, obama, gore, cheny, boehner, reid...etc.

“...barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.”

People today do some stupid fear factor type stunt and think they’re somebody, they have “bragging rights”. RIP.

That is the first I had heard about Charles Durning.

I enjoyed his ‘Sidestep’ and have played that youtube video frequently. He captured the essence of politics in that one.

Have tried to watch The Odd Couple re-runs on MeTV, but after seeing a few they're pretty much all the same and a little boring.
But back in the day, it was one of my favorite shows and I'd rather watch every episode over and over again instead of the absolute trash that today's television has become.

WPIX in NYC ran Star Trek ,I Dream Of Jeanie, and The Odd Couple all in a row in the 70’s and it was required viewing for myself along with my friends while growing up in the Bronx.

We loved the action of Star Trek, everything about Barbara Eden but we especially loved the comic chemistry between Jack Klugman and the late Tony Randal.

Jack Klugman also served in World War II, according to his Wikipedia biography.

Everyone who served in WW II is a hero to me.

Couldn't stand "Quincy" after it turned overtly liberal.

I do remember Klugman in "The Twilight Zone". The trumpet one. IMDB says he was in four (4) of them.

Never watched more than two episodes ... I thought Klugman was miscast.
I also still wonder how he got the role of Juror #5 in the original 12 Angry Men as the "kid" who grew up in a NYC slum and knew how to knife fight.
Did not compute.

Amazingly, out of that group, Gore did a stint in Vietnam (albeit as a journalist).
