12/28/2012 | Self

My Daughters cat just died. Expired from Natural causes as near as I can deturmine, I went to pet him and he was starting to stiffen up.

He was a good cat, black as Satan with a propencity to open closed doors. She is heart broken.

"Not if you have a lot of expensive furniture"

I'm very sorry for the loss of your cat.

But if your furniture is that expensive and you are not willing to take the time and trouble to actually train your next cat not to scratch it, I would advise against getting another one. Declawing is serious surgery; bone is removed. It involves a painful recovery period, and during that period the cat still has to walk, scratch around in its litter box, etc., regardless of the pain it feels.

Declawing can result in behavioral changes. If your next cat is declawed and doesn't like the result, and its personality is affected, you might decide to get rid of him and take him to the shelter. There he will be surrounded by other cats with claws, and no way to defend himself. The same is true if he should accidentally get outside.....he will have no defense against other animals.

You can talk to a vet or research online for many options to protect your expensive furniture. Declawing is not humane.

Pets are close to us and love us. I love my dogs and cats and will miss them when they are gone. God Bless your family.

After dealing with a week of Christmas parties and two dogs and several children visiting our cat Bob slipped out and was gone all last night. He came back this evening once I moved the cooler off the deck.

It is tough , but they don’t live forever. We have had some live close to 20 years, but that is rare.Get a shelter cat.

It tears at you, but it happens to all our little buddies, always too soon it seems. God did not grant them near the lifespan we have, so we are left to deal with losing several of them over the years.

My consolations to your daughter. Just let her know the kitty went peacefully in his sleep. That we could all go so well, rather than the way too many of us end up with, cat and human alike.

Mine, too, but it was bathroom doors. Couldn't stand for anyone to close a bathroom door. I'd warn visitors to lock the door but they never believed me until it was too late.

Oh, lordy, I got a story. I moved to PA back in the mid-eighties and moved in with my grandparents, they had an apartment in the back of their house. The only bathrooms were on the second floor of the house. My grandfather had a hard time climbing the stairs so he would take a leak outside. Well, the cold got to him the winter I arrived and he spent a month in the hospital. So my grandparents had a bathroom built in the hallway leading from the kitchen.

So they had some good friends over and they were all in the kitchen and my grandfather, with much fanfare, announced he was going to use the bathroom. He went in and closed the door, and then my cat went and pawed it open for all the company to see him sitting on the throne.

“... pawed it open for all the company to see him sitting on the throne”.

Bwahahaha! Well, you did say that he had invited “some good friends”. If you are going to be embarrassed, it is better to be in front of good friends.

They are with us such a short time. We lost two in our household this December, Patch on the 2nd (intestinal tumours) and Sandy on the 18th (some feline version of a stroke). The house just seems empty without them. Both of us have been multiply ill with dental problems, back problems, colds, flu, chest infections, you name it - just one thing after another. The bank accounts have been emptied by medical and vet bills and basically its just been a miserable couple of months all round.

Roughly a year ago today, our beloved thirteen year old tabby cat, Leo, passed away. It was sad stuff and I can relate to what your daughter is experiencing.

About a week later I decided the house was too quiet without a pet, so I brought home a 12 week old Siamese. He has turned out to be the most alpha and destructive cat imaginable, but an absolute joy.

Give your daughter a big hug.

While they are declawing the cat just have them rip out your fingernails and toenails.

Cats are some of the best people I know.

Mutilating them because your furniture is more important is so wrong.

I made a scratch setup for my cat. She loves it. She has mutilated it.

We are considering getting another dog partly because the one we have is getting older.....

That's an excellent idea. We've done that also when we had a dog. If you're lucky bringing a new one in will revive the older dog and give it more life, but there's always the possibility that the original dog might resent a new dog and see it as someone trying to take it's place. Just depends on the dog. Some say if you introduce the other sex it's an easier transition. Anyway, good luck. I bet it'll go well.

Words escape me.... But I will try.

You took the time to post that your cat died,

better yet your daughters cat died.

I want your type of life, so simple and unencumbered by nothing more serious to announce to the world that your daughters cat died.

Some General that led troops in battle, passed. A war monger so who cares... your daughters cat died

Your president during one of the most dangerous times (financially) just signed an executive order raising the pay of the VP, congress, and federal workers,

but your cat died....

Not to mention everything else that is going on in the country

WOW.... Just wow!
