All of us rely on our skills when SHTF. So we all hope that we can cover all of major skills that can lead us trough all basic needs in order to survive. So we choose to learn lot of things, how to fight , how to can, how to grow food, how to heal people. And we are buying equipment and learn things.
We choose different approaches, someone chooses to learn just basics from one skill, or someone chooses to learn one particular skill in depth. Like to be very good in growing food when SHTF.
But most of the people take trading and bartering in long term survival scenarios for granted. Most of the people see trading like scenes from the movies. So there is some kind of accepted picture that man gonna be able to go out with bag of potatoes for example and trade it for something, for batteries or whatever.
Or there is gonna be something like trading place, where you can go and check what is on offer there.
It is actually strange how lot of things are covered good at lot of places on forums and blogs when it comes to some skills and equipment, but when it comes to trading it is accepted more or less that it is common sense that it is gonna be easy to trade things.
When SHTF we all going to trade things, no matter how great we are prepared, because it is gonna be way of living, one of the few ways of obtaining the things we need, especially for long term survival.

Good plan. Now all you need are the spikes to go with them.
All good common sense rules.
To make disposable razors last a long time, be sure to DRY the razor (especially the blade) off real good on a towel immediately after using the razor. I’ve got some I’ve been using several months using this method. (It’s the moisture that is left on the razor blade that dulls it, and it’s no trouble really to rake each side of the razor over a dry towel after each use.)
marker for tomorrow’s reference
ping for later use
If your razor blades (or your knives) get really dull you can sharpen them on the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug. Not a perfect solution but much better than a dull blade or razor.
bfl thanks
Just got a supply of small solar powered flashlights and P38’s for my trading stash. Also haev extra matches and bic lighters. As far as skills, my physical ones are limited but I am a mean crocheter and can make a lot of items. I would love to see a crocheter go on Survivor wearing a big old sweater. They could make a crochet hook out of wood, take apart the sweater and make a net for catching fish early on. That would be cool to see but no one has done it yet.
“So Ive got that going for me”
...which is nice.
Dip in 90% rubbing alcohol before drying.Blades will keep forever. Alcohol forms an azeotrope with any water trapped in crevasses in the razor and pulls the water out to evaporate faster. (Hint: it is the major component of the razor saver thingy that someone use to market— the “secret liquid”). Azeotrope means the water mixes into the alcohol, and lowers the boiling point of the net mixture (which means the whole mix evaporates faster than just water alone). FWIWorth.
Gee, where do you find 90% rubbing alcohol? The strongest I’ve found here is 50%. - Thanks for taking time to post that information. - There’s not much that hurts worse than a dull razor blade scraping over skin; and razors wearing out would become a problem if for some reason there weren’t any more available for a long time.
Enrolled.
High value, low cost: Lentils and split peas are cheap and they cook pretty fast as opposed to beans .... good protein source & filling, too.
Good list, but one glaring omission. I’ve been stockpiling canning lids - it stands to reason they’ll be valuable.
This is true and they would be the best beans to use for barter due to the fast cook time. However, I would bet a person would want pintos, kidney, or other more “regular” beans because they are familiar with those and not so much lentils and split peas. I bet that would happen even though they had little water to cook the regular beans.
Choosing regular beans over lentils or split pea may be a southern choice. Could be people farther north use lentils and split pea more than southern folks. Maybe some of you who live “north” could speak to this.
“Good list, but one glaring omission. Ive been stockpiling canning lids - it stands to reason theyll be valuable.”
That’s a good one to add.
90% rubbing alcohol - I generally find it on the self next to the 70% stuff.
Tattler brand canning lids are reusable.
LOL best post of the day.
I’ll be sure to keep kleenex on hand to trade with him, just in case. :)
