VANITY: Another shameless vanity about old (1990's) Ford trucks
Vanity ^ | 1-6-2013 | Vanity

Yeah, I've posted the question on F150online.com but experience has proven that I can get better opinions faster and more of them here at FR.

TOPICS: Chit/Chat
KEYWORDS:
So here it is:

1993 F250, 4.9l I6, five speed, 4.10 gears

Compared to: 1995 F250, 7.5l V8, five speed 4.10 gears (Looks like a nice one, btw.)

Obviously the latter is going to pull a medium-sized backhoe around while the former sometimes struggles with a landscape trailer. So that's good.

On the flip side, what difference should one expect in fuel consumption, both just driving around and pulling a trailer?

TIA

'90s are nice, but I prefer my 1969.

I loved my ‘77 F-250 / 300 straight six. You could barely control the twin I-beam suspension on a bumpy road, and it didn’t like highway speeds over 50 or so, but put a thousand pounds of horse manure in it, and it drove like a Cadillac.

A 460 will get about 10ish MPG unless you tow a house and haul anything you want anywhere you can find traction.

No comparison to a 4.9. None.

FWIW I had a 85 F-150 with the 4.9L I6 and mileage was terrible. On a trips from Kansas City to St. Louis and back, about 230 miles, I would have to punch a tanker just before St. Louis and again just before KC on the return leg. 15mpg was a good run usually 13.5 to 14mpg was standard.

According to the gents at the garage I have been dealing with almost forever that 4.9L would pull almost anything but the mileage was less than desirable.

My 99 F-150 with a 4.3 V6 would get between 19 to 20 mpg on the same trips. I would not have to tank until about halfway back to KC as a rule.

You’re going to see around 10-12mpg with the big block and average around 15-18 with the 300 straight six. Towing and high speed highway driving will alter the equation a bit.

Thanks. It’s got a F-250 Camper Special cab, 8-lug axles, C-6 tranny, 390ci engine on a F-100 shortbed chassis. It’s fun to drive but with the way I drive it, it gets around 10mpg and rear tires don’t last long. :-)

I’m looking for pix to post on my last project I built for my parents who wanted an off-road/camping truck to go play in the desert. I gave them something a bit...much...

I think you’ll like it. Gimmie a few min..

BTW, that is one damn fine Ford you got there. The 5 pounds over the rear axle, the 5000 pound FE in the front and the 3-400HP might possibly explain your mysterious tire wear ;)

Just a preference, your decision will have to be yours. I have a 1998 F150 Lariat 4x4. My wife has a 2005 Freestyle. We’ll get rid of the Freestyle before long. I may be buried in the truck. Older, more miles, but better built than the newer vehicle.

My ‘97 F250 crew cab has the 460 and it’s lucky to get 11 mpg on the highway. It’s brutal to visit the gas station.

I replaced my ‘96 F-150 with the six with a ‘97 F-250 with the 4.6L V8. Mileage is better with the eight cylinders and power is noticeably better even with the heavier vehicle. In my opinion, the six is underpowered and has to work too hard.

The 1995 has a 7.5L V8? That must be a typo - the diesel is 7.3 for that year and I thought the V10 was 6.0L. If you can find a 7.3L diesel from like 1998 thru 2001, that engine is bulletproof.

I have a 2001 F250 SD with the 7.3L diesel. 240k miles and still solid. The only major issue was a short in the engine wiring harness (rubbed against a bracket until it shorted). Other than that, almost nothing other than standard maintenance since I bought it new in July 2001.

I currently pull our 30' RV trailer with it. I plan on keeping it until I can't drive any more.

More commonly known as the 460 cid V8. When I posted the thread I didn't want to use metric designation for one engine and standard for the other.

Thanks for the tip on the 7.3l diesel btw, I've heard that Ford diesels have had good years and bad years.
