The kid learned at least two things most kids are not learning in this day and age:

1. How to write a sincere, polite, coherent letter.

2. How to admit a mistake and take responsibility for it.

Those actions were rewarded. Jumping up and down and demanding a new one would not have been. Looks to me like that teaches a lesson.

Thank you for your response. However I still disagree. -(
(1)His father probably wrote the letter.
(2)He shouldn't have took the toy shopping.
(3)By saving up his own money rather than asking for a Federal company bailout would have driven home the lesson more impressively.

Bob...maybe I should have put a “sarcasm” at the end of my post. I agree with you. Personally I just think this was some guerrilla marketing by Lego. The turn around on buying the set, losing the piece, writing a letter, mailing it to the company during Christmas/New Year, having the letter read by someone in the company and receiving a response, then have it go viral all over the net with pictures.

Seems orchestrated, huh? I didn’t say it at first but thought it. But if some here get some “Christmas cheer” out of it, I don’t want to snow on their parade. Cheers!

Excellent response from the company!

Clearly, the intelligence they use to create and build such wonderful products lives and breathes in their customer service department as well.

Just take a look at some of the 1000’s of comments on the Yahoo article. “Hook, line and sinker” LOL!! Tons of comments already comparing generous Lego Co with mean ole companies who don’t give away product. It is just like after this election churches falling all over themselves to give away goodies to all the children of Obama voters so they will know how much they care. I reread the letter again and this really stands out to me...

“I am really upset I have lost him. Daddy said to send you a email to see if you will send me another one.”

Now on top of teaching the kid to ask for a freebie he didn’t even make the kid “write” a real letter.

Ya gotta love FR. There is an infinite supply of pessimism, anger, and dejection, and any potential downside to a nice story will be unearthed, come hell or high water.

Add disgust. The kid was told not to take it. The kid disobeyed his parents. The kid lost it. Dad teaches kid doesn't have to face consequences or learn responsibility. Enough of these "good deeds" from companies and the rest of us have to pay for it. This FReeper has had enough of all this gimme, gimme, gimme.

The fact is that a kid disobeyed his dad and lost his toy. Another fact is that the dad told the kid to “email” the company and ask for another one for free. IMO This is not a heartwarming story about a generous company with a smart PR staff...it is a frightening story about a set of values being passed on to the next generation.

So they laid off a 100 people and made one boy happy with three dollars worth of plastic.

Dear Luka,

We at Lego, Corporation are sorry to hear that you lost your Jay ZX. Unfortunately, Lego recently had to lay-off 100 people, and many of them are now eating cardboard and living in vans down by the river. So stuff it.

Merry Christmas,
Lego Customer Service

My son loves the Lego Architecture kits...just got him the “Fallingwater” one, that will keep him busy for awhile.

Just out of curiousity, how do you feel about a kid catching a ball at a baseball game, later asking the hitter to autograph it, and being told it will cost $30? Valuable lesson learned, or not?

Really?? I don’t even understand how that pertains to the subject of a boy disobeying his dad and then asking a company for a freebie. These comments should put the chill in any conservative’s heart. From the original Yahoo article.

“we need more companies to follow to make the world a better place. God bless the corporate world for a good deed well done.......finally!!!!”

“Awesome!! That young man has learned a valuable lesson-”be honest in admitting you made a mistake and learned from it” and you will be respected for your integrity. Nice job his parents have done thus far!!

“That is awesome, I wish there were more stories like this. Instead we hear how companies do everything in their power for the almighty buck and don’t really give a chit about the customers.”

I'm sorry, was this a taxpayer subsidized Lego set?

Should chill? You are defying the laws of physics. This is a heart-warming story (even if it proves to be fake--in which case, hooray for the cynics!).

The relation to my hypothetical, and this story, will be determined by your response to it . . . the kid caught a baseball, largely due to good fortune, and is asking for a "freebie." So, what's the lesson to be learned?

Good fortune catching a baseball has nothing to do with a kid disobeying his dad ,losing his toy and then being rewarded by not only a new one but a better one. BTW here is another comment from the article. What do you think about a “good citizen” being defined by ignoring your parents and then asking for a freebie?

“Everyone’s praising Lego , but , what about giving the boy some credit ? Here’s a good citizen in the making ! Congrats , Luka , your parents must be very proud of you !”

See #4 - they may be expensive, but they are a good investment. I bought a train set for $120. I can now sell that set for $300-400 on ebay.

I'm not asking you if my hypothetical "has nothing to do" with this story. I'm asking you to respond to it.

For the record, it was a 6'-4" gentleman who caught the ball, and handed it to the kid. And it was an Orioles-Whites Sox game. /s

I, for one, will never buy a Lego set again. This is an outrage.

How about this comment...

“Our congress should take this to heart and learn from such a great company . Way to go lego . I live 5 miles from lego land . Great place for the kids .”

So now Congress, in these peoples minds, need to learn to just give away “stuff” and everybody will get warm fuzzy feelings. No wonder Obama got reelected.
