Just saw it.

After all the torture controversy over it I think it was overblown. They showed a guy getting waterboarded for like ten seconds. Then they showed him having his pants removed in front of the Maya character. Then they showed him led around like a dog for around 10 feet and put in a small box.

Marathon Man had worse torture and that movie is 40 years old.

I didn’t think the film was pro-torture or anything. It never said this stuff worked and was the reason we got Bin Laden. It was more that this was went on in the beginning and it’s a part of the story.

I think the real anger from the left is that t he film was not anti-torture. There was no statement from anyone about how what they were doing was wrong. No one showed any remorse or regret. No one criticized it.

The left was looking for that moment. They wanted some here character to stand up and deliver some righteous monologue about how Bush and Cheney were all war criminals and how America was staining its soul by doing this stuff. And there was none of that.

Did Bigelow pay a price by not getting nominated? Maybe. But she was nominated in every other awards show and has already won quite a few. So there are plenty of critics and guilds groups that have recognized her.

Moreover, Boal was nominated and if the left really had a beef it would be with him since he actually wrote the script and developed the narrative/plot/story. Bigelow just filmed/directed it. Boal’s the guy who’s responsible for the depiction and viwpoint on torture. And the academy nominated him, so I don’t see some huge conspiracy or effort to deman the film. It was nominated for best picture and best actress.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I knew the story going on so I already knew what was going to happen in a lot instances.

I would have liked to see a bit more about the CIA base bombing. But that’s really a whole different issue. How did they ever let someone like that get so close, tons of mistakes there.

Also, watching the actual raid I kept wondering why Bin Laden wasn’t more prepared. The SEALS were outside his house for 10+ minutes and he had to hear the choppers and the grenades/charges and gunfire. yet he pretty much just stayed in his room and was unarmed when he was hit. Kind of odd he was so passive. I guess maybe by that point he was just resigned to his fate. Tired of hiding/running.
