When last I read a sword and sorcery fantasy novel about human warriors trying to save the world against the onslaught of darkness, instead of dark elves, goblins and orcs I couldn’t help but visualize the humans defending against socialists, LGBTers and OWSers.
They are the antagonists of our current national tale. And like the fantasy novels, they may have been born to be wholesome beings but their souls and even their appearances have been warped by the power of corrupting evil. I mean, not just what they say and do, but look at them. There’s a difference between just being plain looking and having something vile inside you that twists your visage, almost like a warning, ‘this is evil stay away’ and yet that vile appearance and character draws other twisted people to it like bees to honey.
Sometimes I think these old fantasy tales of cataclysmic confrontations between good and evil, the old sagas, the viking tales of Ragnarok, the books by R. E. Howard and Tolkien and others, aren’t just literature but expository descriptions of human psyche and culture. Men tend to attract and inharbor spirits of evil or good. Spirits of good tend to cause men to explore independence and excellence, to compete for accomplishments and fame while treading a warrior path of personal integrity. While men who tend to attract and inharbor evil spirits tend to cluster, and fester, and feed off the weaknesses of others, and delight in twisting their view of the world and the minds of everyone they touch, they seek to reach a critical mass of evil so they can roll like a tsunami wave over the whole land.
People who tend to follow spirits of good, are so independent it takes a great act of will to come together and act as one body to face evil. They are the true diversity...alike in honesty and truth, but each living life as they see fit, not needing a “hive mentality” or “koolaid doctrine” that keeps evil acting in lockstep with each other. And this is the evil ones, the “orcs” great advantage...their dependence and LACK of diversity makes them act together, when they move forward, it is like army ants on the march, consuming everything in their path. Conservatives are so used to acting independently and even being solitary in their self-sufficiency and conflicting with their own kind, when evil comes they may be overcome like one old lion surrounded by a pack of laughing hyenas.
It takes a great act of will to cause independent minds to act in unity, usually an impending threat of great evil. Or, as with the founders of our country and the writers of the Constitution, a recognition of a perennial evil in our world, and forming a government that protects our freedoms and individualities while retaining agreement of unity for the sake of our society.
No wonder the “orcs” insinuated themselves in government. No wonder “dark elves” whispered Alinsky rules and strategies to the disaffected. No wonder “goblins” seek to normalize gay marriage and pedophilia, and “trolls” try to force liberal leaders on conservatives, saying our only path is one of expediency, a middle road, to accomodate and ignore evil and perhaps they’ll allow us to exist.
An interesting tradition that I found some tribes of native Americans and the old Norse viking chiefs held in common was the War Arrow. Indian tribes often had conflicts, and the old vikings likewise were very independent and irascible and didn’t get along with each other. But when there was a threat to all the tribes, a warrior would dip an arrow in blood from the point to the fletchings, and run unarmed and carrying nothing but the War Arrow to all the other chiefs...and even if two chiefs were locked in battle, they would drop their differences to face the crisis that threatened all. It was one tradition no one disobeyed, because they knew, when evil has been allowed to fester and have it’s way, when it spreads across the land only warriors in unity, shield to shield, can halt the wave. And only the sword can cut back it’s growth. Jesus wasn’t just being euphemistic when he commanded His followers to buy swords, He knew that when His work was finished, evil would try to erase it, and He didn’t intend His servants to be unprepared.
I think we need to recall that traditional signal of the War Arrow, to acknowledge that there is a point where our individual paths must converge on a road to battle when forces of darkness are about to overwhelm us, because that time is coming near. The festering pustule in DC and major cities is about to pop and spread it’s poison across the whole land, and it won’t be satisfied until every man, woman an child is either under the influence of its taint or enslaved to its service.
The time for battle is coming. Be ready. If you’re confined to a wheelchair and your only weapons are knitting needles, sharpen them and train to roll faster and stab harder. The viking gods admitted to heaven those who died with weapons in their hands, YAHWEH likewise does not keep under His wings those who know evil is coming and do nothing. It is time, and well past time, to stop apologizing for being spiritual people of the light and begin recalling our warrior culture and assuming a warrior mentality while we still have a hope of a future to fight for. We must all learn to lock shields with those whom with we disagree, but let no one who is on the side of the Right be turned away, or turn back from the conflict when it’s time. Because whether or not it’s a warrior coming over the horizon with a bloody arrow, the call will come, and we’ll know.
We should make ready.

You are onto something. Indeed, what you observe explains well why the Conservatives are losing (”you can’t herd cats”), and why the lemmings are winning while they slowly and unknowingly approach the cliff. Others have notes similar things without connecting them to Tolkien, but the comparison is apt, I think. The idea, Buckley’s, if I’m not mistaken, was that it is difficult for people (for many reasons), who as a matter of principle are wary of government, to obtain control of the government.
