Charleston, S.C. -- Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose political career was derailed four years ago because of his affair with an Argentine woman, is attempting an improbable comeback.

Once mentioned as a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender, the 52-year-old Republican said Wednesday he will run for his old congressional seat in his home district along the South Carolina coast. Sanford, a penny-pinching conservative long before the Tea Party movement, said he is done apologizing for the affair and wants to restore "fiscal sanity" to Washington. He believes voters are ready to give him another shot in office.

His behavior would be an asset if he ran as a Democrat.

Washington is full of sinners. If we’re going to send one, at least make sure they have an excellent voting record, and Sanford does.

If he wins, maybe Lance Armstrong and Manti Te’o should follow his lead and go into politics.

Does he have any tips on hiking the Appalachian Trail?

No, he probably just has a very robust opinion of himself as all narcissists do. What a Grade A Fancy male sex organ!

He’s not running for Pope. He’s running for Congress.

Shame is sometimes a good thing. Too bad it’s in such short supply nowadays.

Not that it matters much, but he was an OUTSTANDING governor...at least when they could find him.

Of course it matters... I don’t think the people of S.C have forgotten otherwise he wouldn’t be running. He has good approval ratings still, probably higher than the current Governor of South Carolina.

“He’s not running for Pope. He’s running for Congress.”

So are you meaning he will fit right in? Probably needs to run a a democrat to get all the advantages!

I’m not judging his personal life, he’s already been raked over the coals. I judge his voting record, which was excellent in the House. I’d rather have 300 Mark Sanfords in Congress voting right than a bunch of pious leftists and RINOs voting wrong.

Any time a person in office puts him/herself in the position of being blackmailed because of shall we say improper behavior, then that person has lost all ability to govern effectively.

It is not the actual deed of infidelity that bothers me, it is his questionable judgment.

Your point is not incorrect. I merely state that I don’t think he would be so stupid as to revisit his past mistake in judgment. I give him one more chance to redeem himself politically, as you & I are in no way able to grant him such a reprieve with respect to his familial life. Ultimately, of course, it is up to the primary voters of SC’s 1st district as to whether or not he is worthy of a second chance.
