I see nothing good in hurting others feelings.

Well, there you go.

And I pity children who were raised by literal-minded parents who don’t know the difference between the world of the imagination and lying.

Boy, howdy. Just today we took down these puppets, or marionettes, that we had hanging there for years. I operated the horse in crude fashion, and my two year old grandson was instantly terrified! It was alive! Is that a lie????????

I couldn’t even lie about that. When my daughter would ask that question I’d tell it wasn’t the dress.

“There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood” Proverbs 6:16, 17 (the full list is Proverbs 6:16-19.) We have an example of this in Acts 5:1-11; I’m sure you remember Ananias and Sapphira and what happened to them when they lied.

> It seems to me that this so called expert confuses the idea of being kind and polite with lying.

I’ve been doing what I’ve been doing for about 20 years and considered an expert but there is one truth a mentor once told me - no matter how much experience or training the “expert” has he can always be wrong. He also said never call yourself an expert; let others do it because once you say you are an expert the vultures will come to pick you apart and destroy you in a courtroom. Basically just state that youve have been doing XYZ for o many years and that others have indicated that you are an expert. has worked for me so far...

I think Sun Tzu’s ‘Moral Law’ was also as much Taoist as Confucian. The Art of War seems very rooted in Yin/Yang duality and non absolutism.

And in my line of work we have a definition of an ‘expert’

x is the unknown quantity and a spurt is a drip under pressure

I think all apply

Lol, your daughter is one thing but what if a close lady friend asked, would you say the same?
I don’t actually lie, I’d probably say ‘the dress looks nice’ and just avoid the actual question.

I agree with you and do as you do. There is no need to be cruel when it involves a decent person.

Saint Nicholas was a real person. His story is inspirational and really should be part of what we teach our children.

Yes, he was and my kids learned about him.

My kids don't need your pity, but thanks, anyways. They were very happy children and are happy and productive adults. You can define imagination any way you'd like, but I think imagination looks something like this: "Hey, kids! Let's pretend that you're the cops and those guys are the robbers!" Or "Let's play house! We'll make believe you're the mom and I'm your little girl." Everyone is in on it and knows it's not real. That's imagination.

I recently had one of my kids tell me that because we never did the Santa Claus thing, he always knew we never lied to him. That was nice to hear.

I realize that most people enjoy the Santa tradition and most people aren't scarred by it. Although, I do know a few people who were ticked off when they found out the truth when they were kids. It's just too bad that people can't be more accepting of people who do things differently than other people. I never gave my friends who did it a hard time and most of them let us do our thing without comment.

Yep, it helps stop the question from being asked over and over. Besides it might help her see the truth.

OK, good enough. I’ve never actually heard of a woman asking that question. If they ask it - they already know the real answer, lol.

Well, that may be your idea of the imagination, but it is an impoverished one, and again, to confuse the myths and poetry of life with the idea of lying is a form of philistinism beyond the usual depressing anti-intellectual art-phobic cant one encounters on FR.
Even if each of your children has become a millionaire, I still pity them and anyone else who was raised in a childhood without belief in magic, the mother of the creative imagination.

You are just too much! We don’t do Santa with our kids and my kids are deprived, lacking in imagination and impoverished? My kids are as normal as normal can be. They all have a great sense of humor, get along with each other and pretty much enjoy their lives. If you met them, you would never have guessed that they never believed in Santa Claus.

Do you overreact this way to everything you encounter in life that’s different from you? You really are rather humorous. My husband and I and one of my kids are getting a lot of laughs here.

If I did to you the equivalent of what you are doing to me, I’d say something like this: “I pity your children because they were taught lies from early on in life and as adults they have trust issues that will damage all of their relationships. All because you lied to them about Santa.” Does that sound ridiculous? It should. It makes about as much sense as what you’re saying about the kids whose parents didn’t tell them Santa was real.

It’s NO BIG DEAL! Think about how silly the things you are saying are. I actually am thinking now that you don’t actually believe all that stuff. You’re just sitting at your computer trying to get a rise out of a total stanger. I guess I fell for it.

Well, yes, I am serious, because this is something that I take seriously. As to your children being “normal” I’m sure they are, by your standards, since everyone, whether they are grass-eating nudists or merely Oprah-watchers who put ketchup on all their food, including icecream, thinks that the way that they are is normal.
The question is not whether you and your family are normal - it’s about, I say again, about having been deprived of the greatest gift of childhood, which is a belief in magic. Even children who have grown up in abject poverty have had that. You can keep laughing, reveling in the flat literal-mindedness of the world you live in. I still pity you and what you did to your children.

I'd like you to meet my youngest son.  He is on the improv team at the college he attends.  He wrote all of these lyrics and the music.  He directed it and played the keyboard.  He did this for a contest last year and his team won.  It's hard to believe someone who grew up not believing in Santa Claus could create something like this with his own imagination!  Maybe he is just making up for all he years he sat around like a zombie in his dull and "magic-less" childhood.

Most Awkward Guy in the World

Make sure to watch past the first minute or so.  It starts off slowly.

I'll let him know about your pity and hopefully he won't quit the improv team once he realizes that he has no imagination.
