Bang For Your Buck: A Guide To Affordable & Reliable Firearms For Preppers
Survival Blog ^ | 1-24-13 | IK

Rifles Your needs: Hunting, varmint control, “just in case”

Why: While some people may use or need a rifle for home defense, all the rifle owners I know use their rifles for either target shooting or hunting and varmint control. They use a different kind of gun for personal or home defense. However, for the sake of argument let’s say that the proverbial excrement has hit the rotating airfoil and that you, despite the fact that you get your meat from the grocery store and don’t run into coyotes at the bus stop, could be called upon to defend all that is categorically good from all that is categorically bad. In light of this potential situation, you should gravely proclaim to whoever is in charge of your bank account that it is morally incumbent upon you to own a rifle . . . just in case.

While semi-automatics are incredibly popular and effective, a good bolt-action rifle is the most rugged, durable, economical, and time-tested rifle platform available. Remember: this article is for the average person who does not need something like a battle rifle. That being said, my recommendation for a cheap, reliable bolt-action rifle is, in fact, a battle rifle. Oops.

Recommended: Mosin-Nagant 1891/30. Cost: $100

“have you checked the pawn shops... The price tax and all was $244 and they had 4 30-round mags”

I don’t do pawn shops as I’m not qualified to know if the gun is okay or not. I did find a Ruger 22LR by going to every gun shop on internet every day and suddenly finding one that popped up at Kentucky Gun Co. and I bought it. I’ve mentioned that rifle already - it’s PINK and was $260.

I have that one 25 magazine for it that I got a few months ago. If you have 4-30 round magazines you can sell those for a lot of money. I saw on one individual sell site a 25 magazine for the Ruger was $100.

Also, high count magazines can't be found. I got a 25 magazine for a Ruger 22LR before they were gone,

I paid too much for several of those, brand new, at a garage sale after the last ban, and now they are threatened again.

“You just have to keep looking.”

I have been the expert “looker” for a month until I found that one Ruger 22LR and got it.

The 25 magazine I have for it is after market - the Hot Lips one. I still want the Ruger company made one. The Hot Lips was not expensive but that was before there weren't any, now they are expensive. The actual Ruger one would probably be $40-50 now. It is crazy.

I found some Remington hollow points for it that would be shipped in one or two weeks, so bought those. Maybe they will be here next week. That was from Cabela and now those aren't available anymore.

As soon as something comes in, it's gone. I was at a shooting range near my house several days ago, a big gun shop, and only 10 cartridge mags and no hollow points for anything and no rifles to sell. They still had handguns.

I love those C&R guns. Before people went crazy picked up 3 Mosins for less tha. $300 total. A few years back Ishapore Enfields in 7.62 NATO were going for $120.

CZ82s were $200 a copy, and they were damn nice copies. LOL. Glad I filled my safe early. LOL.

“Oh yeah... but your thumb would hate you in a NY minute.”

I think you are talking about loading a magazine. I have to buy a magazine loader for the 22 so I don't rip my thumb. My hands are also not strong, so I have to get a loader. I had forgotten about that, but must do it. I have read about them, know how they work and had settled on one and think I saved that page in favorites. I'll do that tomorrow. Hopefully, those aren't sold out. I've got all the gun company pages in favorites. I always check CheaperThanDirt first, since it is the closest to me. If I lived where you do, I'd probably camp at their store. I've been there once.

That’s why I love stripper clips. 10 rounds per clip, which work perfect for an SKS with an original 10 round fixed magazine.

I know about what you paid due to my every day searching for several weeks. The only good thing about buying my PINK Ruger 22LR, was that it was from Kentucky, and it was free shipping with NO TAX.

You are lucky to have found the takedown because I didn't see any of those in stock anywhere.

The Mosin sounds good in theory, but there are issues to consider. I gunsmith for a living and can tell you that commonly replaced parts on the Mosin are in fairly short supply when compared to a lot of bolt rifles. Another issue is that there is not a lot of brass cased ammo out there. You will be hard pressed to find cases to reload in a SHTF scenario.

No, Marco... the SKS uses a stripper clip into a fixed magazine attached to the firearm.

It's not like loading an external magazine which is later inserted into the firearm.

I manage to knock a little bit of bark off my thumb every time I use a stripper clip with an SKS, so generally, I shoot one round, reload one round with that rifle for my main use for it (ferals).

Of course, if stuff hits the fan, the blood just lubes the action, and I'll take notes on the whining after the action is over.

Rossi .357 magnum lever gun shoots both .357 mag and .38 special.

Paired with a .357 revolver you have a nice combo.

Or H&K USC + a 1911 style pistol if you have the money.

Or an UZI & a Sig 226

Or .44 mag Henry lever gun & 44 mag revolver if you can afford the ammo.

The options are endless!

Work perfectly for you perhaps, but I'm less than thrilled with facing reloading an SKS with a stripper clip.

Perhaps I need to learn some technique that I haven't mastered.

In stock new 303 brass.

Warning. Company has had a 20 minute phone que since some time in November. Has not let up.

On line orders have no delay, but shipping time is 10-14 days the last time I talked to them. Simply that overcome with order volume.

If you do not reload, find a local friend to help you do it.

I have never seen brass so hard to find.

“My problem is I don’t sell many of my toys ;-)”

That's like my jewelry. When I married those many years ago, I had one ring and it was from Mexico. My husband said we had to do better than that, and I did for many years. Gold and precious stones. Every piece has a history and I would never sell any of it and would kill any sucker who got close to it. You have your toys and I have my toys.
