Duran Duran's Simon LeBon: "Westeners should put recession into perspective."
OK! Magazine ^ | 1/27/13

Posted on 01/27/2013 11:06:01 AM PST by SilvieWaldorfMD

Pop star SIMON LE BON has urged Westerners to gain a level of "perspective" over the economic slump, insisting problems in Europe and the U.S. are minimal compared to the issues facing Africa.

The Duran Duran frontman has spoken out to share his views on the global recession and admits he is baffled by complaints from affluent families who need to tighten their belt.

He tells The Times, "We have to put this economic slump into perspective. Even though the recession might be tough on us in the West, we have to get through it and should remember how people live in Africa and India, where they have absolutely nothing but family, love, music and fun."

"... remember how people live in Africa and India, where they have absolutely nothing but family, love, music and fun."

Not to forget Assault Rifles (the real kind with selectable fire), RPGs, explosive vests and the occasional tank. Pretty idyllic.

People will probably jump all over him for saying that, but I agree with him.

We've built a consumer culture where, as Neil Postman said, we amuse ourselves to death. Most of us have too much "stuff". Our society's labor and capital go toward lawyers, marketing, tacky fashions, and bad culture.

It's not for me to say how others live. I would wave no magic wand. I would propose no "leveling" legislation. But I think we would all be a lot better off if we lived frugally, ate basic food, wore simple clothing, and spent less time with electronic toys. We're not poor -- but many of us sure seem unhappy.

Hey Simon, why don't you do us all a favor: get your good friend Bob Geldoff (sp), Bono, Sting, and other mega rich liberal entertainment friends and go do a benefit concert where 3% actually goes to the victims.

Sorry, but to this day I cannot watch the “We Are The World” video. These people are absolute douche bags!

Until this celebrity is living on $50k a year (as half of all Americans are) and wondering how the higher taxes and energy/food costs demanded by the Obama regime will affect his standard of living, I invite him to STFU!!

I don’t agree much with his liberal leanings, but I gotta give him credit for being married to the same woman (Yasmin LeBon) for over 28 years... they have 4 kids (I think)...

Bono too — married to Ally for 30+ years.

In the crazy & wicked world of Rock & Roll, these marriages have lasted through thick & thin.

Yup. Pearls of wisdom from a washed-up bi-sexual git from a washed-up ‘80’s rock band.

With the peoples and the countries of the west being bankrupted by 0bummer, who is going to be in a position to help the starving people of Africa?

I agree with you and Simon. In the West, we've lost the appreciation of what poor really means. The “poor” in America have flat screen color TVs, WiFi, free cell phones, and free breakfast, lunch and dinner provided by the Government, along with the free housing.

And yet, they want more. When the global economic collapse comes - and it is coming - the poor will really understand what life is like in Africa and India.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't enter a new age of feudalism
