The equal treatment of gay spouses in the military took a step forward after the Fort Bragg spouse’s club offered full membership to the wife of a female officer.
Ashley Broadway, who is married to Lt. Col. Heather Mack, was offered full membership to the Association of Bragg Officers’ Spouses on Friday, after initially being offered a guest membership.
“In order to immediately support all military officer spouses who are eligible for ABOS membership, a more inclusive definition of spouse was needed,” the group wrote on its website.
Moving forward, the group said any spouse of an active duty commissioned or warrant officer with a valid U.S. marriage certificate would be eligible for membership. “It is and always has been our mission to support military families,” the statement said.
Broadway’s application was rejected in November on the grounds that she did not have a military identification card. While spouses are given ID cards, Broadway had a card that afforded her the same privileges as a nanny, designating her as a caretaker to the 2-year-old son she has with her wife.

With two lesbians, how do you know which one is the wife? Isn’t it a little sexist to assume the one that isn’t the officer is “the wife”? And isn’t it sexist to use these terms because of their universal heterosexual definitions, because there is no such thing as a female husband? That would imply one lesbian is pretending to be “the man” in the relationship, and I thought this would be the last impression they’d attempt to make.
I thought neither were wives. I thought they were just “spouse 1” and “spouse 2”.

No, but in the current political climate within the military, those officers who want to look like they are “team players” will make sure they at least portray themselves and their wives as “open and inclusive” to the homosexual and lesbian officers and their “partners” so that no assignment is closed to them. You gotta play the political game, whether officer or senior enlisted.
Yeah, some wives will be frosty towards these homos/lesbians, but eventually the great social experiment will be so forcefully pushed that the traditionalists will exit/retire.

nope, not betting on anything! Some of the wives will just absolutely fall all over themselves to “welcome” the homos/lesbians; others will befriend the homos and sneer at and/or shun the lesbians; and then some will sneer at/shun them all. And, then some smart wives will just not belong/join the OWC and find other things to do with their time.
It’s definitely not the same military my dad was in, nor the same one I retired from. I can only wonder just how long my stepson will stay in this “new” military.
